WV, U-Hi baseball play back-to-back next week
The break is over. Athletes return to school next week and have one month to complete their league seasons.
Three weeks of postseason play follow to complete the 2005-06 high school athletic season.
Heading into the week, West Valley is tied for first place with Ferris in Greater Spokane League baseball, University is third, Central Valley and East Valley share seventh place.
University is tied for first place and Central Valley is fifth in softball.
East Valley leads soccer with CV third, U-Hi, eighth overall, is chasing a 4A district playoff berth.
Tennis completes its divisional round robin schedule next week and begins cross-over contests.
CV boys share second in the National Division. U-Hi girls are second in the American, while CV and WV are in the upper half of the National Division.
Golf will have the second of five GSL matches on Tuesday (boys) and Wednesday (girls). CV and U-Hi boys are in the top five after one week, CV girls are fourth.
•Games of note next week in baseball include games between the Eagles (5-1) and Titans (6-2) Thursday and Friday.
WV swept Shadle Park by scoring 24 runs – 12 in each game – including eight in the top of the eighth inning of game two.
The Eagles had 28 hits in the two games, including nine doubles and a triple.
Mitch Phillips and Bryan Peterson were 3-for-3 each in game one, Phillips driving in three runs and scoring three more. Matt Peterson had four hits in the twin bill, all of them doubles. He also won the second game pitching in relief.
Greg Bradley had three hits on the day and pitched a one-hitter for the first win.
East Valley completed a split of its six games against fellow Valley teams with a 15-hit 12-4 win over U-Hi after losing 2-1 in the opener.
Jye Lanphere had six hits, including a double and one of the Knights’ three home runs during the twin bill.
In the second game, EV led just 5-4 until scoring seven times in the seventh inning. Skyler Schiller and Tanner Hamilton also homered and had three hits each. Mike Stewart also had three hits.
Stewart’s two-run single in the seventh, giving him four RBIs for the game, broke open the game that he won pitching in relief.
Adam Smith doubled in the winning run and improved his season pitching record to 3-1 for U-Hi in the opener. EV, which out hit the Titans eight to three, was thwarted on a failed seventh-inning squeeze attempt to tie.
•CV softball faces unbeaten Shadle Park and once-beaten Rogers in key games next week. U-Hi hosts once-beaten North Central.
•All three Valley soccer contenders face a series of important games next week, including Cheney at University, Central Valley at Lewis and Clark and North Central and EV.
Golfers brave wet, cold
Start of the women’s golf club season was wet and cold as early outings can tend to be.
•Liberty Lake 18s: The brave souls who dared compete were led by Patsy Lynn in A flight with low gross 94, Jean Hatcher in B with 98, Connie Hatfield in C with 105 and Maggie Steffy in D with 118.
Net winners included Billie Etter with 82 in A, Honey Conlon with 87 in B and Louise Newtson with 78 in C. There was no D division handicapped score.
•Painted Hills League: Scores tended to be close during the cold opening week.
Gail Bailey shot 53 for nine holes to lead A flight. Melody Chesnut shot 53 in B, Ellen Spalding had 56 in C, as did no-handicapper Lisa Ward. And in D flight, Nancy Moore shot 64.
Net winners were Darlene Hurliman with 43 in A, June Hathaway with 35 in B, Carol Schjodt with 39 in C and Ina Grunwald with 38 in D.
Liz Grafos chipped in for a birdie on the seventh hole and Joyce Jacobs had a chip-in on No. 9.
•Trailhead Ladies Golf: Leading the way at the Liberty Lake course was Marcia Rowley, who shot a 44 in A flight .
Three golfers, Sharron Collins, Bev Johnson and Patty Haskins tied at 54 in B flight, Grace Libby shot 67 in C. No-handicap winner was Brenda Miller with 55.
Net leaders were Carolyn State with 34 in A and Collins with 27 in B.
