WSU’s Julie Pickler wins heptathlon
Washington State University’s Julie Pickler kept the heptathlon title in the family Thursday at the 79th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin.
Pickler’s 5,734-point total was a personal best and an NCAA automatic qualifying mark. Her twin sister Diana finished third with an NCAA qualifying score of 5,579 points. Last year, Diana Pickler won the heptathlon at the Texas Relays while Julie was the runner-up.
•Eastern Washington’s Stephanie Ulmer was named Big Sky Conference player of the week after setting the school and conference record with a javelin throw of 165 feet, 8 inches at the Al Manuel Invitational.
Prep track and field
Timberlake’s boys took all but three first-place finishes, and the girls grabbed all but five as both Tigers teams topped visiting Kellogg in an Intermountain League meet at Spirit Lake. Levi Powers and John Macklin each grabbed a first- and two second-place finishes to score 11 points apiece for Timberlake. Adam Furlin was first in the shot put and discus for the Wildcats. Chelsea Cazier swept the three sprints, Cammy Kuchenski won both hurdle events and Kelly Kincella grabbed both distance races for the Tigers.
Prep softball
Moscow’s Inland Empire League doubleheader against visiting Post Falls was postponed because of poor field conditions. No makeup date was reported.
Prep golf
Kyle Finlay (39) and Sue James (45) were medalists and their Kellogg teams swept the team competition in an Intermountain League dual at Pinehurst Golf Course.
