Sonics’ owners threatening sale
The Seattle SuperSonics are for sale.
Following the teamn’s first Board of Governors meeting since their demand for $220 million in public funds was rejected by the state Legislature, the Sonics issued a statement on Wednesday essentially saying they are now entertaining offers from potential buyers for Seattle’s first professional sports team.
“The sale of the franchises (Sonics and Storm) has never been our preferred option, but given time running short on our current lease, we must contemplate all scenarios,” the statement read.
In case the Sonics are unable to secure a buyer, they have left open the option of returning to Olympia next January and for the third consecutive legislative session asking for a public subsidy to help with their arena situation, which they say has caused them to lose $60 million since they purchased the team in 2001.
The team also said it is keeping open the possibility of building another arena in the area, likely Bellevue, although it did not say how it would achieve that goal.
