• Here’s a test for you: Who made the following pronouncement? “Numerical superiority is of no consequence. In battle, victory will go to the best tactician.” If you guessed Gen. George Custer, you’re right on target. Judging his final battle by his own words, Custer must not have been a very good tactician. Or else he was just wrong, and numerical superiority does count for something. I don’t think he’d be comforted either way.

• The Cayman Islands are well-known as a financial center, catering to individuals and organizations with an interest in offshore banking. The finance industry is so prevalent there, in fact, that there are more than 700 banks — that averages out to one bank for every 63 people who live there.

• It was humorist Fred Allen who observed, “California’s a wonderful place to live — if you happen to be an orange.”

• The next time you go to the mailbox and bring in all the junk mail and catalogs, consider this fact: 40 percent of the space in U.S. landfills is taken up by paper.
