Students to share climbing trip experiences
University of Idaho students who traveled to South America as part of a mountaineering trip offered through UI’s Outdoor Program will share their experiences at a presentation at 7 p.m. April 13 in Room 106 of North Idaho College’s Meyer Health and Sciences Building.
The group traveled to the Cordillera Blanca Mountain Range last spring with the goal of climbing several peaks. During the 21-day adventure, Mike Beiser, the director of the outdoor program, along with four students reached the summit of Ishinca, an 18,134-foot mountain, and Urus, at 17,777 feet.
“Higher Education in Higher Places” will include still images and video taking attendees on a journey through the trials of the climb. In Peru, climate changes have had a dramatic effect on glacial recession, confronting the students with steeper glacier faces and even freshly-exposed granite where the glacier had melted away.
The presentation is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by NIC’s Outdoor Pursuits program.
