Fancy fiddling

You haven’t seen fiddling until you’ve seen a 6-year-old wail out a tune that make it hard to keep from jumping up and dancing. The best of the best will be performing today and Sunday at the 38th annual Northwest Regional Fiddle Contest at East Valley High School, 15711 E. Wellesley Ave. It attracts competitors from as far away as Alaska, Canada, South Dakota and everywhere in between.

The competition begins at 8 a.m. today and the championship finals begin at 9 a.m. Sunday. It’s always fun to watch and has a great family atmosphere. Single-session tickets are $8 for adults and $7 for seniors. A weekend pass is $18 for adults and $16 for seniors. Children under 5 are free. Check out the lineup at www.nwregionals.com.

Spin your partner

If the fiddle contest puts you in the mood for dancing, sign up to the Spring Break square dance class for youth ages 10-18. The beginning lessons will run Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Western Dance Center, 1901 N. Sullivan Road.

The class is hosted by the Western Dance Association and the Spokane Valley Parks and Recreation Department. Participants are asked to bring a sack lunch each day. The cost is $20 per person or family for the week. Call 921-1116 for more information.

Pancake buffet

Edgecliff SCOPE is having its annual breakfast fund-raiser Sunday from 8 to 11 a.m. at the VFW, 212 S. David Road. The volunteer community policing group runs several community programs in the neighborhood. There will also be a raffle with tickets going for $1.

The cost for the meal is $4.50 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under. So grab a fork and some maple syrup for a yummy meal that benefits a community program. Just don’t forget to also grab a napkin to mop up the inevitable drips and smears that children manage to acquire.
