SPOKANE AREA JOURNALISTS beware. Students at the West Valley City School are looking for a good scoop.

The City School Noise, the school’s new student newspaper, will be published every two weeks this year.

The Noise “is going to contain information and entertaining articles for the enjoyment of everyone in City School and the surrounding community,” Editor-in-Chief Jordyn Toulou writes in the first edition of the paper, printed Oct. 14. “I’m really looking forward to seeing how we are going to tie in big, real-world events to our own school.”

Articles featured in the first edition include a story on rising gas prices, the opening of CenterPlace at Mirabeau Point Park, a movie review of Tim Burton’s “Corpse Bride,” and a story about a school field trip to Dishman Hills Natural Area.

Lead by adviser and teacher Judy Harris, newspaper staff includes Toulou; Collin Creer, assignment editor; Campbell Smith, copy editor; Johnny Belcher, photo editor; Kris Woolery, layout/design editor; Ashlyn Sellers, advertising manager; Caitlin Stone, business manager; reporters, photographers and assistants include Kieran Abbots, Brian Gaddy, Rixana Jopson, Cameron Maring and Emily Nelson.

On Thursday, newspaper staff will broadcast live on KYRS Thin Air Community Radio, a local community radio station located at 95.3 or 92.3 FM, from 1:40 to 2:20 p.m.

The paper also will feature advertising from local businesses. For more information about the Noise, to send a letter to the editor, or to advertise call 921-2836 or write to: City School, 8920 E. Valleyway, Spokane Valley, WA 99212

VCS student travels to D.C.

Rhett Trom, a senior at Valley Christian School, was selected to participate in the National Youth Leadership Forum on Defense, Intelligence and Diplomacy in Washington, D.C., this month. The forum is designed to introduce high school students to careers in national security, intelligence and other diplomatic jobs.

Trom was one of only 333 students selected from a pool of thousands across the United States for the event, founded in 1992.

Trom was nominated and accepted based on his strong GPA and his leadership skills at Valley Christian, said Bobbie Worley, a spokeswoman for the school.

Also at Valley Christian, senior students Robert Zakheim and Josh Dixon received honors in the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship program. Zakheim is a semifinalist in the program, and Dixon is a commended student.
