Summitt’s summit: ties Smith’s 879 wins
Tennessee coach Pat Summitt’s latest milestone victory was similar to so many others in her illustrious 31-year career.
The Lady Vols’ (27-4) 94-43 rout of the Western Carolina Lady Catamounts (18-14) in an NCAA first-round game Sunday night in Knoxville, Tenn., was win No. 879 for Summitt, tying her with former North Carolina men’s coach Dean Smith for the most victories in NCAA Division I history.

Purdue 68, New Mexico 56: At Knoxville, Tenn., Erin Lawless had 22 points and the ninth-seeded Boilermakers (17-12) used their height advantage to beat the eighth-seeded Lobos (26-5). Mandi Moore led New Mexico with 18 points. Purdue will play Tennessee in the second round.
Ohio St. 86, Holy Cross 45: At College Park, Md., Jessica Davenport had 23 points and 11 rebounds, and Brandie Hoskins scored 14 points as the Buckeyes (29-4) topped the Crusaders (20-11). The 29 wins surpasses the school mark set by the 1984-85 team and matched by the 1992-93 team, which advanced to the Final Four.
Maryland 65, Wisconsin-Green Bay 55: At College Park, Md., Shay Doron scored 26 points and sparked a second-half surge for the seventh-seeded Terrapins (22-9). Playing on its home floor and before a partisan crowd, Maryland used a 14-2 run to take a 56-45 lead with 5:17 left, enough to dispatch the 10th-seeded Phoenix (27-4). Abby Scharlow scored 21 points for Green Bay. Maryland will face Ohio State in the second round.
Rutgers 62, Hartford 37: At Storrs, Conn., Cappie Pondexter scored 22 points and hit five straight shots in an early 21-2 run to lead the third-seeded Lady Knights (26-6) over the Hawks (22-9). Hartford made only 10 field goals, tying an NCAA record for fewest in a game.
Temple 66, Louisiana Tech 61: At Storrs, Conn., Candice Dupree scored 16 of her 20 points in the second half to help the sixth-seeded Owls (28-3) beat the Lady Techsters (20-10) and win their 25th straight game. Erica Crain led Louisiana Tech with 28 points. Temple will face Rutgers in the second round.
Chattanooga Regional
DePaul 79, Virginia Tech 78: At College Park, Md., Jenni Dant scored the winning basket with 4.9 seconds left, and the fifth-seeded Blue Demons (26-4) blew a 20-point lead before escaping with a win over the Hokies (17-12). Dant and Allie Quigley scored 22 points apiece for DePaul, which overcame 24 turnovers.
Liberty 78, Penn St. 70: At College Park, Md., Katie Feenstra had 22 points and 11 rebounds, and Rima Margeviciute added 18 points and 12 rebounds in the Lady Flames’ (25-6) win over the Lady Lions (19-11). It was the fourth time a No. 13 seed beat a No. 4 seed in tournament history. The Big South champion Flames will play DePaul in the second round.
Duke 80, Canisius 48: At Chapel Hill, N.C., Mistie Williams had 21 points and nine rebounds to help the second-seeded Blue Devils (29-4) rout the Golden Griffins (21-10). Monique Currie added 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Blue Devils, unbeaten in 12 first-round games.
Boston College 65, Houston 43: At Chapel Hill, N.C., Clare Droesch scored a season-high 23 points for the seventh-seeded Eagles (20-9), who defeated the Cougars (21-9). Sancho Lyttle led the 10th-seeded Cougars with 12 points. Boston College advances to face Duke on Tuesday night.
LSU 70, Stetson 36: At Knoxville, Tenn., Temeka Johnson scored 15 points, Seimone Augustus added 14 and the Lady Tigers (30-2) took their first step in the tournament with an easy win over the Hatters (17-14). Kristy Brown led 16th-seeded Stetson with 17 points.
Arizona 72, Oklahoma 69: At Knoxville, Tenn., Dee-Dee Wheeler scored 16 points, Jessica Arnold had 15 and the ninth-seeded Wildcats (20-11) won a first-round game for the first time in five years by beating the Sooners (17-13). Leah Rush led Oklahoma with 28 points, and Dionnah Jackson had 17 points and a career-high 17 rebounds. Arizona will play LSU in the second round.

Connecticut 95, Dartmouth 47: At Storrs, Conn., freshmen Charde Houston, Mel Thomas and Ketia Swanier combined for 25 points, 11 assists and five steals for the third-seeded Huskies (24-7), who routed the Big Green (17-11). Elise Morrison led Dartmouth with 15 points.
Florida St. 87, Richmond 54: At Storrs, Conn., Ganiyat Adeduntan had 19 points, and the sixth-seeded Seminoles (24-7) hit nine 3-pointers and shot 56 percent from the field to beat the Spiders (23-8). Florida State will play Connecticut in the second round.

North Carolina 97, Coppin St. 62: At Chapel Hill, N.C., Ivory Latta scored 27 points, and Camille Little added 17 as the top-seeded Tar Heels (28-3) beat the Lady Eagles (23-8). North Carolina has won 14 straight games since a loss at Florida State in January. Sherrie Tucker scored 14 points for Coppin State.
George Washington 60, Mississippi 57: At Chapel Hill, N.C., Jessica Simmonds scored 14 points to help the Colonials (23-8) rally from a 14-point second-half deficit and beat the Lady Rebels (19-11). George Washington will meet North Carolina in the second round.
