Check for AAA, Costco discounts before renting car
To get the best price on car rentals, shop around.
Online sites such as those of Avis, Dollar, Hertz and Thrifty will give an idea of costs. Check the deals section of each for special offers, which may require promotion codes.
As you look at rates, be sure you’re comparing the total cost, not the base rate, since added fees for things such as car seats and additional drivers can vary widely.
Members of AAA, AARP, Costco and others should check for club discounts. Sample savings include a free tank of gas from Hertz for AAA members and 5 to 25 percent off rates at Avis, Hertz and National for AARP members. But your membership doesn’t mean these are the cheapest rates available.
Check Car Rental Express (888-557-8188; www.carrentalexpress.com) for rates from more than 100 independent rental companies. Rates from smaller companies are often lower than their major counterparts. Usually the biggest savings are on daily rates, while weekly rates offer modest savings. The Web site’s Hot Deals section offers online coupons for rentals in selected cities.
In addition to offering discounts on restaurants and activities, Entertainment books provide coupons with six car rental agencies. Sample savings include a free weekend day with Budget and 20 percent off an Enterprise rental. Contact: www.entertainment.com.
Once you have an overview of prices, check rates at Hotwire.com or place an educated bid at Priceline.com. Once booked, these rentals can’t be changed; be sure you’re getting a good price before committing.
Be aware when booking flights that it’s best to arrive and depart around the same time of day. If the difference is more than three hours, most car rental companies will charge for an extra day.
If you have a rate that can be canceled, keep checking prices before your departure. I have found that rates may go down as the travel date approaches. In one case, I canceled an earlier reservation and saved nearly $30 over the club membership rate I originally booked.
Insurance can double or triple your rental costs. Before you get to the rental counter, be sure to check with your credit card and auto insurance companies to clarify your coverage, or you could be throwing money away.
Reserve the smallest car that still meets your needs. Small cars usually are the first to run out, so you could receive a free upgrade.
One-way rentals generally cost more than those returned to the originating location. In addition to higher one-way rates, you also may be charged a drop-off fee.
