Districtwide concert planned

The Spokane Public Schools elementary music program will present its annual band and strings concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Spokane Arena.

The concert features more than 2,000 boys and girls from every elementary school in the district who will perform 16 separate pieces.

Fifth- and sixth-grade children will play strings, woodwinds, percussion and brass instruments under the direction of conductors from throughout the district.

The Rogers High School steel drum band will also be featured.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Donations to support district music programs will be accepted.

Candidates named

Jonathan Steenblik, a senior at St. George’s School, and Annie Virnig, a senior at Lewis and Clark High School, have been selected as two of the 2,600 candidates in the 2005 Presidential Scholars Program. The candidates were selected from nearly 2.8 million students expected to graduate from U.S. high schools this year.

Candidates are selected based on their performance on either the College Board SAT or ACT Assessment scores.

Inclusion in the Presidential Scholars Program is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high school seniors

Fund-raiser scheduled

Nate Raver, a fifth-grade student at Roosevelt Elementary School, is undergoing treatment for osteoarcoma, a type of bone cancer.

The family has many medical expenses and has had to make trips to Seattle for treatment.

A spaghetti feed fund-raiser and raffle to benefit the Raver family will be from 5 to 7 p.m. March 18 at Roosevelt Elementary, 333 W. 14th Ave. Cost of the dinner is $4 for adults and $2.50 for children.

If anyone would like to donate raffle items for the event, they are asked to call Char Russell at 354-4020.

Media center cited

Best Buy has awarded a $2,500 te@ch award to the Medical Lake High School Library Media Center.

Nadean Meyer, librarian and multimedia teacher, applied for the award, which will be used to support updated digital cameras for student learning.

Students make short videos in the multimedia production class, in the introductory unit of media in freshman career choices class, and for the culminating project, including the job shadow for seniors.

Information night at All Saints

All Saints Catholic School will offer parents of children in preschool through eighth grade a chance to meet teachers, ask questions about the curriculum and tour the facilities during two upcoming open houses.

Parents with preschoolers (who will be 3 before Aug. 31) are invited to attend an open house at 7 p.m., Tuesday at 1404 E. 34th Ave. The preschool offers classes for 3-year-olds, as well as 4- and 5-year-olds during morning and afternoon classes.

Information on kindergarten through eighth-grade classes will be presented at an open house at 7 p.m. next Thursday at the primary building campus at 3510 E. 18th Ave.

Child care is provided for both information nights.
