ML’s Nelson earns tennis scholarship
Zak Nelson, a Medical Lake senior who finished second in boys singles at the last two State 2A tennis tournaments, has been selected as one of 35 winners nationwide of a $5,000 college scholarship by the MassMutual Foundation for Hartford Inc., and the USTA Tennis & Education Foundation.
Nelson, the Cardinals’ No. 1 player since his sophomore year, led Medical Lake to two straight State 2A team titles and was named the Great Northern League’s most valuable player this season.
The winners are selected by the USTA foundation from applicants around the country based on their commitment to academics, their community and tennis. At least one scholarship is awarded in each of the USTA’s 17 sections throughout the country.
Baseball
Evan Ewing got his AA American Legion career off to a resounding start Wednesday when the Ferris freshman pitched six innings of two-hit ball, striking out six, in a 5-4 win over Cheney.
In other AA games that night, Travis Hauff had a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the seventh to give East Valley a 3-2 win over Central Valley and Phil Joy of Gonzaga Prep went 3 for 3 with three RBIs in an 8-4 win over Colville.
On June 6, K.C. Truman of Colville threw a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts in a 4-1 win over Deer Park, while Brenden Cunningham of Gonzaga Prep hit a triple and a home run, driving in five runs in a 10-1 win over Lakeside.
University won the Cheney AA tournament over the weekend, defeating West Valley 4-1 in Sunday’s championship game. Travis Lewis had three hits to lead University. In the third-place game, Central Valley defeated Medical Lake 5-2.
In AAA Legion play, Michael Stewart of the Cannons went 3 for 4 with a grand slam and a double, driving in seven runs in a 12-4 win over the Patriots on June 6. Also that night, Chris Bozo of the Northstars hit a game-winning, three-run homer and struck out nine in a 5-4 victory over the Bandits in five innings.
In a non-league preseason game June 1, Austin Giglio of Spokane Athletic Supply CV pitched a no-hitter in a 9-0 win over Coeur d’Alene.
Climbing
Two of the three Spokane youths, who competed in the USA Climbing divisional championships last weekend in Tigard, Ore., qualified for the national meet in Boston July 1-3.
Melissa Main from Lewis and Clark finished second in the female Youth B division and Bryan Brenize of Gonzaga Prep placed third in the male Youth A division to advance.
Kennedy Krossen, who is home-schooled, came out of the first day of the two-day meet in contention, but missed the final cut.
