Indians win one more in 10th

Jaime Cárdenas Staff writer

For the second straight night, the Spokane Indians beat the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes in 10 innings.

And for the second straight night, Joe Kemp scored the winning run.

Phillip Hawke lined a single to left field with none out in the bottom of the 10th inning, scoring the pinch-running Kemp from second base, to give Spokane a 5-4 Northwest League victory Friday night at Avista Stadium.

With the game on the verge of slipping away from the Indians, Nate Fogel, Tim Crabtree, David Peterson and Crabtree, again, combined for the franchise’s first triple play since 1914 in the sixth inning.

After a home run by S-K’s David Maroul erased a 3-1 Indians lead, Fogel took over for starter David Smith with no out and runners on second and third in the top of the sixth. His first pitch was lined into center field by Jose Yens to give Salem-Keizer their first lead of the night.

Fogel soon had Andy Busch on a full count.

“At 3-2, I told Crabtree that the runner at first might be going,” said Hawke, who tied the game at 4-all in the bottom of the sixth with his second home run of the ninth.

“I threw (Busch) a slider and I struck him out,” said Fogel. “Then I hear some one say, ‘He’s going, he’s going.’ “

“When I saw the runner going, I broke to second,” said second baseman David Peterson, who tagged out Yens at second.

“As soon as Crabtree threw the ball, I knew we had him at second,” said Fogel. “But then I see that the runner at third is going home.”

The strikeout/throw-out/throw-out triple play kept the Volcanoes’ lead at one.

Hawke then led of the bottom of the sixth with his second solo home run of the night to tie the game.

Reliever Tanner McElroy held the Volcanoes to one hit in three innings.

Notes

Spokane’s triple play in 1914 was turned in by future Hall of Fame first baseman George Kelly. Kelly, while playing right field, made a shoestring catch of a low line drive and turned it into a triple play, according to the Indians media office. … This is the second triple play in the NWL this season. Boise had one on July 6.
