Chef will take shoppers to market

From staff reports

Love looking at the gorgeous fruits and vegetables on the tables at area farmers’ markets, but paralyzed when it comes to conjuring up a meal? Try shopping with an expert.

Next Wednesday, Latah Bistro chef David Blaine will lead a group of shoppers through the Spokane Farmers’ Market to shop for ingredients and share a meal made with market-fresh produce.

Blaine will talk about shopping at the market, ingredients available from the local growers and recipe ideas during a tour of vendors’ booths. Afterward, the group will eat a dish the chef prepared ahead of time. Each person will get a copy of the recipe to take home.

“Shop with the Chefs” will run from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and it is limited to 20 people. The cost is $15 per person to pay for ingredients used to make the meal. Reservations are required by Friday at 3 p.m. Call 477-2171 or e-mail Jennifer Hall at jhall@spokanecounty.org.

The event is a cooperative effort of the Spokane Farmers’ Market, WSU Extension Spokane County and Spokane Tilth.

Organizers are holding other “Shop with the Chef” dates for women who qualify for WIC assistance. Local chefs Shilo Pierce, of Luna, Pete Tobin, of the Spokane Community College, and Luna pastry chef Stacy Kerr will be leading the shopping.

There will be another “Shop with the Chef” that is open to the general public in October. Mizuna chef Sylvia Wilson is scheduled lead the shopping. A date will be announced as soon as it is finalized.
