Gonzaga student-athletes top West Coast Honor Roll

Gonzaga University student-athletes topped the 2005 West Coast Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll, released at the conclusion of the 2004-05 academic year.

Gonzaga had 142 student-athletes with at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average, who also earned varsity letters in sports where the conference determined a champion.

In its fourth year of existence, the Commissioner’s Honor Roll honored a record 818 student-athletes this year at three levels: Gold (3.75-4.0 GPA), Silver (3.5-3.74) and Bronze (3.0-3.49).

GU placed 17 athletes at the Gold level, trailing only San Francisco (19), and a conference-leading 38 at Silver and 87 at Bronze.

Football

Whitworth College senior kicker Cameron Collings has been named to both the Street & Smith’s and D3football.com preseason All-America teams for the upcoming season.

Collings (Mead High School) led the Northwest Conference in field goals (7) and field-goal percentage (77.8 percent). He also led all NWC kickers in points (66).

His 53-yard field goal against Eastern Oregon and his 48-yard boot against Pacific Lutheran were the longest of the season in the conference.

Soccer

Chris Allen, head boys soccer coach at Gonzaga Prep, has taken on an added role as new Mead girls coach. He replaces Travis Hanson, who resigned after last season to take a new educational position within the district.

Allen is originally from the St. Louis area where, said Mead activities coordinator Dick Cullen, he lettered in five sports. He spent the past three years as assistant girls coach at Gonzaga before becoming the Bullpups head boys coach in the spring, compiling a 4-9 record.

“He’s a bright young man and very energetic,” said Cullen. “He’s going to be girls coach in the fall and go back to Prep in the spring. We’re pleased to have him.”

•Former Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) All-Star C.J. Moe is one of three players transferring to Division II Seattle Pacific University for the upcoming season.

Moe played one season at the Community Colleges of Spokane and scored six goals in 2004. As a senior at Lewis and Clark High School, Moe scored 20 goals and earned All-State and Greater Spokane League co-offensive MVP honors.

Also transferring to SPU this season will be Colin Rigby (Mercer Island, Wash./Denver University) and David Reuhl (Bothell, Wash./Bellevue CC).

Basketball

United States Navy officer Ryan Monroe (Riverside High School ‘97/Westmont College) has made the Navy basketball team that competed in Carlsbad, Calif., this past week.

All four branches of the military assembled teams and competed in an annual round-robin tournament.

Monroe, a former All-State selection at Riverside, is currently stationed in San Diego.

Lawn bowling

The Spokane Lawn Bowlers mixed triples team placed second in a tournament at Christina Lake, British Columbia, which concluded Wednesday.

The team consisted of Jim Ahern (skip), Chris Peter (vice-skip) and Derek Ware (lead).

The Eastern Washington Youth Outdoor Education Foundation Youth Shooting Program has selected seven shooters to compete at next month’s Washington State National Sporting Clays Association Championship in Puyallup.

The team was selected based on participation, attitude and success in the Youth Sporting Clays Program at Landt Farms west of Spokane. They will compete in the junior and sub-junior divisions and shoot 300 clay targets in three days.
