Catch some Hooops action this weekend at Valley Mall

The Spokesman-Review

People looking for a little sports action this weekend might consider catching a 3-on-3 game at Spokane Valley Mall.

Hooops 2005 has attracted 165 teams that will play on 22 makeshift courts in the parking lot near Sears.

For the 15th year, kids and adults will dunk and pass their way to victory while raising money for YMCA’s scholarship program.

John Edwards, youth sports director for YMCA, said the event generates $5,000 to $7,000 that helps pay for low-income children to play sports.

“By the time it’s all said and done, we’ve got a lot of kids playing sports who otherwise wouldn’t be,” Edwards said.

From noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, kids from YMCA’s Cheer Program will perform a routine.

Edwards said the tournament relies on 40 to 50 volunteers and needs additional help with court monitoring and other tasks. Games run Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

To volunteer, call Robert Bravato at 777-9622, ext. 115.
