Suspect in shooting turns himself in
A suspect in a weekend shooting near Coeur d’Alene turned himself in Sunday night and is being held on a $500,000 bond for alleged attempted murder.
Shelby Russel Krehbiel, 28, of Spokane surrendered to a Kootenai County bondsman about 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Kootenai County Sheriff Capt. Ben Wolfinger said.
Wolfinger said it’s unknown where Krehbiel had been since the Saturday morning shooting in the city of Huetter, between Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls, that left two men wounded. The second suspect, James Preston Haver, 19, of Coeur d’Alene is still at large. Haver is considered armed and dangerous.
Dressed in a yellow jumpsuit, Krehbiel told First District Court Judge Penny Friedlander that he understood the charges and that the maximum sentence could be 15 years in prison and/or a $25,000 fine. Friedlander appointed a public defender to represent Krehbiel.
Krehbiel and Haver went to a home in Huetter shortly before 2:40 a.m. and began fighting with the residents of the home, police said. As the suspects fled, one of them allegedly fired a large-caliber hand gun at people emerging from the home. Who pulled the trigger remains under investigation, Wolfinger said.
Ronald Seth Wilson, 20, who lives at the Reeves Street address, was shot in the torso, and Larry Ray Jensen, 38, of Kellogg was shot in the thigh, Wolfinger said.
Both men were taken to Kootenai Medical Center. Jensen was treated and released, and Wilson was admitted to the hospital but has since been discharged, a KMC nursing supervisor said Monday.
Authorities believe one of the suspects broke into the home of a disabled military veteran about 10 minutes later. The suspect pointed a .45-caliber pistol at Ray Fink’s head. The 56-year-old wrestled the gun away from the assailant and drove him off with the weapon.
Sheriff’s officials ask that anyone with information about Haver call the sheriff’s office at (208) 446-1300.
