Texas A&M overthrows Longhorns to end streak

Acie Law had 24 points and six assists, freshman Joseph Jones added 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Texas A&M (12-1, 1-1) ended an 18-game Big 12 losing streak with a 74-63 upset of No. 10 Texas (12-3, 1-1) on Wednesday night at College Station, Texas.

The Aggies are off to their best start since 1959-60, and first-year coach Billy Gillispie has made the best debut in school history.

The Aggies also knocked off their first Top 10 foe, and fourth overall, since beating Texas in 1982.

P.J. Tucker led the Longhorns (12-3, 1-1) with 18 points and eight rebounds. Freshman LaMarcus Aldridge added 12 points and eight rebounds.

Tennessee 64, (11) Mississippi State 63: At Knoxville, Tenn., Scooter McFadgon scored 14 points and Brandon Crump added 12 as the Volunteers (9-6, 2-1 SEC) ended the nation’s longest road winning streak with an upset victory over the Bulldogs (14-3, 2-1).

(1) Illinois 90, Penn State 64: At Champaign, Ill., Luther Head and Dee Brown each made five 3-pointers to lead the Illini (17-0, 3-0 Big 10) to a victory over the Nittany Lions (6-10, 0-3).

(2) Kansas 71, Iowa State 66: At Ames, Iowa, Keith Langford scored 18 points and Wayne Simien returned from a four-game absence to make some big plays that helped the Jayhawks (12-0, 20 Big 12) escape with a victory over the Cyclones (8-5, 0-2).

(3) North Carolina 91, (8) Georgia Tech 69: At Chapel Hill, N.C., Jawad Williams led a balanced attack with 18 points and the Tar Heels (14-1, 3-0 ACC) rolled to another impressive victory, over the Yellow Jackets (11-3, 2-1). But North Carolina shot only 41 percent, had 19 turnovers and failed to reach 100 points for the first time in four games.

(9) Kentucky 69, Vanderbilt 54: At Lexington, Ky., freshman Rajon Rondo scored a career-high 18 points and fueled a late run as the Wildcats (11-2, 2-0 SEC) pulled away to beat the Commodores (11-5, 2-1).

(18) Cincinnati 84, East Carolina 78: At Greenville, N.C., Jason Maxiell had 24 points and eight rebounds to help the Bearcats (14-1, 3-0 Conference USA) hold off the Pirates (5-10, 0-3), in a win that saw the Bearcats alternate between dominant and disinterested while nearly blowing a 20-point second-half lead.

(21) George Washington 85, St. Bonaventure 59: At Olean, N.Y., Mensah-Bonsu scored 14 points, helping the Colonials (11-2, 3-0 Atlantic 10) shake off a cold start to cruise to a victory over the Bonnies (1-13, 0-3).
