The Spokesman-Review

Leon G. Green, a professor emeritus of physical education at the University of Idaho who served as athletic director from 1973 until his retirement in 1978, died Thursday night in Pleasant Grove, Utah. He was 90.

Green first came to UI on a football scholarship in 1934 and joined the physical education faculty in 1940. Except for his Naval service in World War II, he remained at the university until his retirement.

According to his university biography, after his appointment as athletic director, he “in short order turned a nearly bankrupt and defunct program into a respected and reputable one.”

The university credits him with the development of intramural playing fields, tennis courts, the swimming center and physical education building, in addition to involvement with the design of the Kibbie Dome.

Funeral services for Green will be held Wednesday in his hometown of McCammon, Idaho.
