Taylor-made basket guides Bears to win
Kelsey Taylor’s jumper from inside the key with 30 seconds left Tuesday lifted third-seeded Moscow to a 56-54 upset win at No. 2 Sandpoint in the opening round of the 4A Region I girls basketball tournament.
The victory advances the Bears (9-12) into the regional title game Friday at Rathdrum against Lakeland. Sandpoint (12-7) hosts Post Falls on Friday in a loser-out game.
The jumper gave the 6-foot-3 Moscow post 15 points to go with 10 rebounds.
Moscow and Sandpoint split their regular-season series, each winning at home. The Bears’ biggest lead Tuesday was three points. Sandpoint’s biggest lead was five.
Ashley Mire scored 15 points to lead Sandpoint, but her 3-point attempt at the buzzer rimmed out.
Lakeland 64, Post Falls 51: At Rathdrum, Mindy Meyer hit 3 of 5 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to lift the Hawks to a fourth straight win over the visiting Trojans. PF (2-19) took the lead in the fourth quarter, but Lakeland (14-6) cranked up the defensive pressure while Meyer added the long-range offense. Kayla Stiegemeier and Jessie Bartlett both added 12 points for the Hawks. Heather Arnone scored 11 points to lead the Trojans.

Spartans claim IML crown
Priest River built a first-half lead by forcing 23 first-half turnovers and cruised to a 60-44 victory at St. Maries, clinching an undisputed league championship. Rachel Schlechte scored 15 points and Calli Turner added 12 to lead the Spartans (11-8, 7-0). Rachelle Solom grabbed 14 rebounds and made five steals to lead the Lumberjacks (7-11, 3-4). … Bonners Ferry 53, Timberlake 29: At Spirit Lake, the visiting Badgers pressed in the first half and built a 34-15 led by intermission. Becky Lowther led BF (9-8, 5-2) with 16 points. Lynsie Powers had 12 points to lead the Tigers (4-15, 0-8).

Williams ignites Miners
Krista Williams scored 17 of her game-high 19 points in the second half as Wallace clinched the league championship with a 65-46 win over visiting Clark Fork. The Miners (16-3, 9-0) forced 26 turnovers. Rashell Trunnell and Tiffany Van Buren combined for 23 points to lead the Wampus Cats (6-9, 4-5). … Kootenai 42, Lakeside-Plummer 34: At Harrison, Cassie Scheffelmaier scored seven of her game-high 20 points in the first quarter to spark the Warriors (9-10, 7-2) past the visiting Knights, clinching a second-place league finish. Scheffelmaier also had seven rebounds and four steals. Krystal Stockdale had 11 points to lead the Knights (8-8, 5-3). … Mullan 45, Post Falls Christian 35: Stacey Garitone scored six of her 12 points in the first quarter to spark the Tigers past the visiting Eagles. Anali Carrico led Mullan (2-15, 2-7) with 20 points, 16 rebounds and three steals. Katie Hoye scored 15 for the Eagles (6-14, 0-10).

Park sparks PFC
David Park hit six 3-pointers on the way to 27 points, leading Post Falls Christian to a 70-46 North Star League victory at Mullan. Brack Adkins added 13 points for the Eagles (13-6, 7-4). Cory Pehan scored 17 points to lead the Tigers (5-9, 3-4). … Lakeside-Plummer 90, Coeur d’Alene Charter 41: The host Knights collected 22 steals, led by Andrew Sonder’s six, to top the Panthers. Tim Wolfe poured in 26 points to lead Lakeside (16-1, 9-0). Eli Francovich and Nathan Stueckle combined for 22 points for the Panthers (0-9, 0-7).
