Dr. Robert Burroughs

Spokane

Memorial service for Robert Walter Burroughs, M.D., will be today at 2 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Burroughs, who was born in Buffalo, N.Y., died Thursday. He was 77.

After graduating from Bowdoin College, he served with an Army medical unit in Panama from 1945 to 1946 and obtained a medical degree from Cornell Medical College.

Dr. Burroughs practiced medicine in Spokane for 35 years and was one of the three original members of Spokane Cardiology.

He was a member of the American College of Cardiology and a past president of the Spokane County Medical Society, was active in Rotary International, and served on the boards of the Spokane Community College Foundation and the Inland Northwest Land Trust.

He was an avid birdwatcher and conservationist.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Mary; four children, John, Jim, Cathy and Sarah; a sister, Martha Hogan; and four grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist or the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture.

Paul Hughes

St. Maries

Service for Paul Hughes, 87, will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Community Presbyterian Church in St. Maries. Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hughes, who was born in St. Maries, died Saturday.

He grew up in St. Maries and graduated from high school there in 1934.

He received a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Idaho in 1939 and went to work for Washington Water Power.

Mr. Hughes moved to Washington, D.C., in 1941 and worked for the War Man Power Commission where he met his future wife, Dorothy “Dottie” Zimmerman.

In 1942 they married and moved the next year to Owensboro, Ky., where he worked for Ken Rad Tube and Lamp Co. In 1944 he moved to Detroit and worked for Detrola Manufacturing Co.

He returned to St. Maries in 1947 and worked for his father at Hughes Distributing. He purchased the business in 1950.

He moved the business to Main St. in St. Maries and formed Hughes Heating and Electric Co. in the late 1960s.

The business was later relocated to its current location under the name Hughes Home Center. He retired after selling the business to his son in 1995.

Mr. Hughes served on the St. Maries Library Board and served several terms on the St. Maries City Council.

He was a member of the Community Presbyterian Church, St. Maries Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite, Calam Shrine Temple, was a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star and a lifetime member of the St. Maries Elks Lodge.

He enjoyed wood-working and building model wooden furniture and boats.

He was a Boy Scout leader and served on the Camp Fire Girls board of directors and was a past recipient of the Dr. Luther Gulick Award, which is the highest award presented to an adult by the organization.

Survivors include his wife; two children, John Hughes of St. Maries and Cynthia Eubanks of Sterling, Va.; three brothers, Howard, Ralph and Raleigh Hughes, and a sister, Mary Fleming, all of St. Maries; and two grandchildren.

Glennis (Ramsay) Martin

Sandpoint

Visitation for Glennis June (Ramsay) Martin, 40, will be today from 10 a.m to 7 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint. Service will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Sandpoint with inurnment at Pinecrest Memorial Park.

Mrs. Martin, who was born in Hawthorne, Calif., died Friday.

She moved to Sandpoint with her family in 1971 and graduated from high school there in 1982.

She worked at Kentucky Fried Chicken and Carrera’s in the mall before beginning a career in child care at Sr. Francis Daycare.

Mrs. Martin later opened her own day-care business, Precious Treasures.

Survivors include her parents, George and Eulalia Ramsay of California; four brothers, Ray Ramsay, Al Ramsay and Robert Ramsay, all of Sandpoint, and Carl Ramsay of California; and a sister, Georgia Caven of Sagle, Idaho.

Carol Eggleston

Moses Lake

Memorial service for Carol Jean Eggleston, 57, will be today at 11 a.m. at the Greenbluff Ward of the Northside State, 401 W. Regina Ave. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Eggleston, who was born in Newton, Kan., died Jan. 25.

She resided two years in Aberdeen, Idaho, and then moved to Moses Lake, where she lived for 20 years. She a member of Presbyterian Church in Moses Lake. In 1979 she became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

She worked for Spokane Uniform House and loved sewing and quilting. She and her husband traveled for many years across the country.

Carol is survived by her husband of 31 years, H. Gene Eggleston; three sons, Jerry, Glen and Adam Eggleston; three daughters, Carrolle Knowles, Lezley Beverly and Janet Bokor; her mother, Irene Warkentin; a brother, Gary Warkentin; three sisters, Lois Cox, Ruth Brewer and Helen Dugger; 15 grandchildren and one great- grandson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Vera ‘Mae’ Marshall

Spokane

Funeral for Vera May “Mae” Marshall, 84, will be today at 1 p.m. at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home. Burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Marshall, who died Thursday, was born in Ralston, Wash.

She graduated from Ritzville (Wash.) High School in 1938 and married Lester Marshall in Coeur d’Alene in 1940.

Mrs. Marshall worked for The Crescent department store, retiring in 1970, and was a member of Hillyard Baptist Church and Fowler United Methodist Church.

Her husband died in 2003.

Survivors include a daughter, Kathryn Briggs of Spokane; two brothers, Richard Halsey at Gresham, Ore., and Milford Halsey of Salt Lake City; two sisters, Alta Neiswender of Orlando, Fla., and Esther Dazell of Spokane; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Jerome Hellman

Otis Orchards

Funeral for Jerome John “Jerry” Hellman, 69, will be today at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hellman, who was born in Lemars, Iowa, died Thursday.

In 1953 he married Lavonne Shaffer, and they made their home in Sioux City Iowa.

Mr. Hellman was a long-haul truck driver for more than 40 years. In 1983 he moved his family to Spokane.

He was an avid dog lover and enjoyed old westerns, tinkering in his shop and fishing. He also was a member of St. Joseph’s Church in Otis Orchards.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Lynn Thompson of Spokane; two sisters, Madonna Hellman and Vera Gaul, both of Lemars; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Alvin Batchelder

Dalton Gardens, Idaho

Memorial service for Alvin A. Batchelder, 81, will be today at 11 a.m. at the Hayden Bible Fellowship Church in Hayden, Idaho.

Mr. Batchelder, who was born in Rockford Falls, Wis., died Tuesday.

He moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1941and graduated from Coeur d’Alene High School in 1942, earning All Panhandle honors in football.

He enlisted in the Army in 1943 and served with the 1688th Engineer Battalion. Some of his duties included training troops and he was part of the Japanese Occupation Forces. He was discharged while in Japan but re-enlisted in the Army, serving with the 127th Training Battalion RTC. He was discharged in 1947.

He married Blythe Kessler later that year. After working at the Rutledge Mill in Coeur d’Alene, he moved his family to Garden Grove, Calif., in 1954, where he worked as a finish carpenter and later started his own mobile catering service, Al’s Lunch Service.

He retired to Dalton Gardens in 1983.

He enjoyed fishing, camping, bowling, golfing and playing cards. At family gatherings he would frequently get out his accordion and play his favorite polkas or self-taught songs.

He was a member of the Elks Lodge and a volunteer with the Boy Scouts.

Survivors include his wife; three children, Philip Batchelder of Post Falls, Paula Padgitt of Coeur d’Alene and Alana Mowrer of Merced, Calif.; two brothers, Leland and Delbert; three sisters, Ila, Delores and Margaret; seven grandchildren and two great-grandsons.

Dorothy Raub

Spokane

Graveside service for Dorothy “Pat” Raub, 89, will be today at 10:30 a.m. at Fairmount Memorial Park. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Raub, who died Thursday, was born in Aransas Pass, Texas.

She received her associate of arts degree from Glendale Junior College in the 1930s and worked as a stenographer for many years in Southern California.

Mrs. Raub moved to Spokane in 1975, and was a founding member of the Prayer Line at St. Charles parish.

Survivors include her husband of 67 years, William Raub of Spokane; a daughter, Randall Cannon of Nelson, B.C.; and three grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Horizon Hospice or the American Heart Association.

Jeanette ‘Goldie’ Hull

Spokane

Memorial service for Jeannette “Goldie” M. (McLeod) Hull, 74, will be today at 1 p.m. at Pines Cemetery. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hull, who was born in Sauk Rapids, Minn., died Wednesday.

She graduated from Rogers High School in 1947 and went on to graduate from Deaconess School of Nursing in 1951 as a registered nurse. She worked in nursing for 25 years.

Survivors include her husband of 27 years, David; four children, Cal Walker, Angie Nerren, Tom Walker and Bryan Walker; two stepchildren, Roxannee Fuller and Gary Hull; 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

John Shipp

Coeur d’Alene

Viewing for John S. Shipp, 84, will be Friday from 10 a.m. until the vigil at 7 p.m. at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene. Funeral Mass will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Pius X Roman Catholic Church with a dinner reception to follow at the church. Burial will be at the Veterans Section of Forest Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene.

Mr. Shipp, who was born in Hay Springs, Neb., died Thursday.

After graduating from high school, he joined the Navy and became a pharmacy mate assigned to duty in Guam.

He became a prisoner of the Japanese two days after the attack on Pearl Harbor and spent the remainder of the war as a prisoner of war in Japan.

He received an honorable discharge in 1946 and received the Bronze Star.

Mr. Shipp returned to Nebraska and married Shirley Dorshorst and they had two children.

The family moved to St. Maries in 1956, and he worked as the parts manager at Chase Chevrolet for the next 20 years.

He then became purchasing agent for northern units at Potlatch Corp. for 10 years before retiring.

He moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1989.

Mr. Shipp was a devout Catholic in St. Maries and St. Pius in Coeur d’Alene and served as the exalted ruler of the St. Maries Elks Club.

He volunteered as an ambulance driver for the local hospital and was a Little League baseball coach. He also participated in several parades that honored veterans.

Mr. Shipp enjoyed spending time with his dogs, driving up the St. Joe and Coeur d’Alene Rivers, traveling, bowling, fishing, golf and bartending.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Shirley; two children, Barbara Leyh of Post Falls and Norman Shipp of Coeur d’Alene; two brothers, Larry Shipp of Montana and Raymond Shipp of Pennsylvania; a sister, Lavera of Twin Falls, Idaho; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the St. Maries Elks Lodge.

James Pentland

St. Maries

Memorial service for James Duane Pentland, 45, will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the St. Maries Assembly of God Church. Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Pentland, who was born in Libby, Mont., died Jan. 26.

He moved with his family to St. Maries in 1964 and graduated from high school there in 1978.

Mr. Pentland worked at the Fleet Parts Store and at the Potlatch Mill for 13 years. He worked at Regulus Stud Mill until losing his eyesight due to diabetes.

Mr. Pentland attended a school for the blind in Boise and returned to St. Maries, where he worked out of his home.

He enjoyed working with metal and wood.

Survivors include three children, Tom Pentland of Boise and Michael and Megan Pentland, both of Orofino, Idaho; his mother, Arlene Pentland of St. Maries; four brothers, Ron and Ernest Pentland, both of St. Maries, Donald Pentland of Mountain Home, Idaho, and William Pentland of Wichita, Kan.; three sisters, Elsie Douglas of Libby, Billy Mae Pentland of Spokane and Kathryn Thorhaug of St. Maries.

William Hughes

Sandpoint

Private service for William C. Hughes Sr., 79, were held. Lakeview Funeral Home in Sandpoint was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hughes, who was born in Stratford, Conn., died Friday.

He grew up and graduated from high school in Stratford and served with the Navy during World War II.

Mr. Hughes later worked as a long-haul truck driver.

He married Ludmila Schovance on Valentine’s Day in 1952.

He worked as an electrician for Southern Connecticut Gas Co. and retired as a supervisor of instrumentation in 1989 after 33 years of service.

The couple spent the next several years traveling abroad and in 2004 moved to Sandpoint to be near family.

He was a member of Nichols United Methodist Church in Trumbull, Conn., the Pyramid Shrine Club, Azalea Chapter Order of the Eastern Star and was past master and treasurer of Corinthian Lodge A.F. & A.M. 104.

He served many hours as a volunteer driver transporting burn victims to the Shrine Hospitals in Springfield and Boston, Mass.

Mr. Hughes enjoyed traveling, wood-working, yard work and church activities.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Susan McDaniel of Millersville, Md.; a son, Bill Hughes Jr. of Sandpoint; a brother, Cornelius Hughes of Florida; and three grandchildren.

Margaret Gipson

Mullan, Idaho

Memorial service for Margaret Elizabeth (Smith) “Margie” Gipson, 90, will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the United Church of Christ Congregational in Wallace. Inurnment will be at Forest Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene. Shoshone Funeral Service in Kellogg is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Gipson, who was born in Valier, Mont., died Friday.

She grew up in Mullan and graduated from high school there in 1932.

She married Robert “Bob” Gipson in 1939; he died in 1989.

She worked as a bookkeeper and later retired from the Shoshone County Recorder’s Office.

Mrs. Gipson was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and also served as secretary, and was instrumental in starting the local chapter of the Order of the Rainbow Girls, where she was mother advisor for many years.

Mrs. Gipson was a member of the United Church of Christ Congregational, served as a Camp Fire leader and was a founding member of the Idaho Ski Club.

She enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include a daughter, Marlene Bentham of Wixom, Mich.; a grandson and one great-grandson.

Norman Logan

Spokane

Funeral for Norman Leigh Logan, 79, was Monday at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home.

Mr. Logan, who was born in Hauser Lake, N.D., died Thursday.

He served in the Marine Corps during World War II, and had worked for Kaiser Aluminum, United Buckingham Freightlines and URM Stores.

He was a member of the Inland Empire Retired Teamsters and the Spokane Valley Eagles.

Mr. Logan loved to go camping, snowmobiling and four-wheeling and spent much time at Priest Lake, Idaho, and the St. Joe River.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Patricia; four daughters, Linda Plett of Spokane, Janet Dellwo of Vancouver, Wash., Karen Shriner of Post Falls and Sandy Boone of Palouse, Wash.; a sister, Dorothy Studabaker of Spokane; seven grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Lung Association.

Dona (Ames) Brown

Kettle Falls, Wash.

No service will be held for Dona (Ames) Brown, 77. Neptune Society handled the arrangements.

Mrs. Brown, who was born in Bremerton, died Jan. 19 in Kettle Falls, her home for 11 years.

She graduated from Bremerton High School in 1945 and worked as a secretary for 20 years, retiring from Brown Mechanical as an office manager in 1989.

Her hobbies included raising farm animals.

Survivors include her husband of 33 years, James; three stepsons, James Brown of Gig Harbor, Wash., William Brown of Bremerton and Raymond Brown of Freeland, Wash.; a brother, Mike Ames of San Francisco; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
