Officials warn people about Letourneau

Associated Press

NORMANDY PARK, Wash. – Officials in this waterfront suburb south of Seattle have passed out fliers to local schools and churches, noting that Mary Kay Letourneau is living among them.

Letourneau is the former school teacher who became notorious when she started a sexual relationship with one of her former students when he was only 12 and bore two children with him.

Letourneau and former pupil Vili Fualaau, now 22, plan to marry next month.

Letourneau, now 43, served 7 1/2 years in prison after she was convicted of raping Fualaau. She was released last August.

As a registered sex offender, she must notify authorities of her address. KOMO-TV reported Friday she notified the King County sheriff’s office of her move to Normandy Park on April 21, and local police quickly put out fliers to schools, day cares and churches. The television station also reported that police were called to the residence earlier this month after neighbors called to report that someone had discharged a shotgun at a party there.

The gun reportedly was only shot into the air, but KOMO said the unidentified man with the weapon was arrested. The station reported Fualaau was a witness.

An Associated Press message left for Normandy Park Police Chief Rick Kieffer was not immediately returned Friday evening.
