NASCAR NEXTEL CUP

Aaron’s 499

Site: Talladega, Ala.

Schedule: qualifying, Friday (SPEED, 1 p.m.); race, Sunday (FOX, 9:30 a.m.).

Track: Talladega Superspeedway (tri-oval, 2.66 miles, 33 degrees banking in turns).

Race distance: 500 miles, 188 laps.

Last race: Kurt Busch held off a determined Michael Waltrip in the NASCAR Nextel Cup race at Phoenix International Raceway. Busch led 219 of 312 laps on the mile oval, emphatically putting behind him a streak of bad luck that included crashes at four consecutive events.

Last year: Jeff Gordon took the lead with six laps remaining and was barely ahead of Dale Earnhardt Jr. when the last caution flag came out, giving him the win at the Aaron’s 499. A rule change from 2003 freezes the field when the yellow comes out rather than letting drivers race to the flagstand. Fans littered the track with trash after NASCAR ruled Gordon was ahead.

Fast facts: Through eight races, Jimmie Johnson is the point leader with 1,260 on the strength of five top-five finishes, including one win. … Since 2001, Dale Earnhardt Jr. has won five of the last eight Nextel races held at Talladega. Only Dale Earnhardt Sr. has more victories at Talladega, with 10. … The last pole winner to win a race at Talladega is Bobby Labonte in 1998. Labonte is coming off his best finish (sixth at Phoenix) since he finished third at Pocono Raceway in June 2004. … Records for both speed and competition have been established at Talladega. … A Chevrolet has won the last 12 races at Talladega. Ford has not posted a Talladega victory since Dale Jarrett won in October 1998.

NASCAR BUSCH

Aaron’s 312

Site: Talladega, Ala.

Schedule: Thursday, qualifying (SPEED, 2 p.m.); race, Saturday (FOX, 11 a.m.).

Track: Talladega Superspeedway (tri-oval, 2.66 miles, 33 degrees banking in turns).

Race distance: 311.22 miles, 117 laps.

Last race: Greg Biffle survived an early spinout and won the Bashas’ Supermarkets 200 at Phoenix International Raceway. The former Busch champion and current Nextel Cup star followed up his Cup race win at Texas Motor Speedway the previous weekend by leading 112 of the 200 laps at Phoenix.

Last year: Martin Truex Jr. outlasted mentor and defending winner Dale Earnhardt Jr. to win the Aaron’s 312. The last 31 laps featured four cautions, including one that followed a 10-car crash.

Fast facts: Carl Edwards extended his lead in the standings to 156 points after second-place Reed Sorensen finished 32nd at Phoenix. … Joe Nemechek became the first and only polesitter to win this race in 1998. … The National Stock Car Racing Commission upheld the penalties assessed by NASCAR to driver Johnny Sauter and crew chief Joel Shear and increased the penalty against car owner James Finch to disqualification and a $25,000 fine. Following the O’Reilly 300 on April 16, Sauter was suspended from NASCAR until May 18 (four Busch races) and Shear received probation until December 31, 2005 for “actions detrimental to stock car racing” and use of an unapproved carburetor.

NASCAR CRAFTSMAN TRUCKS

Dodge Ram Tough 200

Site: Madison, Ill.

Schedule: Saturday, qualifying, 1:30 p.m.; race (SPEED, 5:15 p.m.).

Track: Gateway International Raceway (egg-shaped oval, 1.25 miles, 11 degrees banking in turns 1-2, 9 degrees in turns 3-4).

Race distance: 200 miles, 160 laps.

Last race: Bobby Labonte became the first driver to win in each of NASCAR’s top three series at Martinsville Speedway by capturing the Kroger 250 on April 9 in the closest truck event at the track. His Chevrolet beat Ricky Craven’s Ford to the finish line by just 0.257 seconds.

Last year: David Starr became only the second truck driver to win by leading only the final lap at the Dodge Ram Tough 200. The race was scheduled for 160 laps, but was extended by caution a record four times for 14 laps.

Fast facts: Since joining the series in 1998, Gateway has produced seven different winners. … Dennis Setzer, who finished second in last year’s race, has five top-10 finishes in the seven starts at Gateway. … Through four races, Bobby Hamilton leads the series with 633 points, 19 ahead of Ricky Craven. … Rich Bickle, a three-time winner and a veteran of 74 truck series races, returns after being out for more than a year. Bickle’s return features a three-race schedule behind the wheel of the VFW Hidden Heroes Fund Chevrolet.

NHRA

O’Reilly Thunder Valley Nationals

Site: Bristol, Tenn.

Schedule: Friday, qualifying, 1 p.m.; Saturday, qualifying, Noon (ESPN2, tape, 4 p.m.); Sunday, finals, 9 a.m. (ESPN2, tape, 4 p.m.)

Track: Bristol Dragway.

Last event: Larry Dixon gave team owner Don “The Snake” Prudhomme his 100th career victory, beating Doug Kalitta in the Top Fuel finals of the SummitRacing.com Nationals at Las Vegas. Prudhomme had 49 wins as a driver (35 Funny Car, 14 Top Fuel) and now has 51 as a team owner. Whit Bazemore and Dave Connolly also won their divisions to top the season standings.

Last year: John Force finally recorded his first victory at Bristol Dragway by winning in the Funny Car division at the rain-delayed Thunder Valley Nationals. Tony Schumacher recorded his fourth Top Fuel win of 2004 while Greg Anderson took Pro Stock.

Fast facts: The dragway’s first 300-mph run came in 1997 by Doug Herbert at the Spring Nationals. In the same qualifying round, Shirley Muldowney set the record of 302 mph. … Site of the NHRA Spring Nationals from 1965 to 1967, Bristol Dragway was razed and rebuilt in the late 1990s by Bruton Smith. The modernized facility has hosted national event quality competition since 1999. … Point leaders through five events are Tony Schumacher, Top Fuel (420); Whit Bazemore, Funny Car (401) and Dave Connolly, Pro Stock (428).

INDY RACING LEAGUE

Indy Japan 300

Site: Suzuka, Japan.

Schedule: Thursday, qualifying, 8:30 p.m.; Saturday, race, 9 p.m. (ESPN, 9 a.m., same-day tape).

Track: Twin Ring Motegi (oval, 1.5 miles, 10-degree banking in turns).

Race distance: 300 miles, 200 laps.

Last race: Dan Wheldon became the circuit’s first multiple winner of the season after he took the inaugural Honda Grand Prix at St. Petersburg, Fla., on April 3. Andretti racers claimed the top four spots, with Tony Kanaan, Dario Franchitti and Bryan Herta finishing behind Wheldon.

Last year: Wheldon recorded his first career IRL win and gave Honda its first victory on its home track at the Indy Japan 300. Honda was winless through the first five CART races and one IRL event in Japan.

Fast facts: The 2003 race was the first in IRL history to take place outside the United States. … Wheldon (two wins) holds a 24-point lead, 134-110, over Tony Kanaan (three top-five finishes) in the points standings. … This year’s event will be held during Golden Week, a series of national holidays when almost everyone gets time off to play. There’s Greenery Day, Constitution Day, National Peoples Day and Children’s Day. … Twin Ring Motegi opened in 1997 and features three types of racing courses. Along with the oval, there is a 2.849-mile road course and a .634-mile short course.
