Red Sox 11, Devil Rays 3: At St. Petersburg, Fla., Jay Payton hit a grand slam and Manny Ramirez homered one pitch after nearly being hit by a pitch as Boston avoided a sweep with an ejection-filled win over Tampa Bay.

Yankees 11, Rangers 1: At New York, Randy Johnson pitched eight dominant innings, Derek Jeter and Andy Phillips each homered and doubled and New York avoided a three-game sweep by Texas. Jeter finished a triple shy of the cycle and had three RBIs.

Orioles 7, Blue Jays 1: At Toronto, Sammy Sosa homered twice, Sidney Ponson came within one out of a shutout and Baltimore completed a three-game sweep of Toronto. It was Sosa’s his first multihomer game with Baltimore and the 67th of his career, tying him for third all-time with Mark McGwire. Only Barry Bonds (68) and Babe Ruth (72) have more.

White Sox 4, Royals 3: At Kansas City, Mo., pinch-hitter Pablo Ozuna doubled in the go-ahead run in the eighth as Chicago beat Kansas City for its seventh straight win.

Angels 1, Athletics 0: At Anaheim, Calif., pitcher Kelvim Escobar made his first start of the season and Steve Finley homered in the seventh to lead Los Angeles over Oakland.

Twins at Tigers (ppd.): At Detroit, the Detroit-Minnesota game was postponed by snow. A makeup date was not immediately announced.

National League

Cubs 5, Pirates 2: At Chicago, Kerry Wood left early with tendinitis in his right shoulder, but still got his first win of the season, leading Chicago over Pittsburgh.

Dodgers 8, Rockies 6: At Denver, Milton Bradley had four hits and Los Angeles scored five times in the eighth inning, rallying past Colorado to avoid a three-game sweep.

Braves 4, Phillies 0: At Atlanta, John Thomson pitched five-hit ball for seven innings and Atlanta beat Philadelphia to finish a three-game sweep.

Cardinals 8, Astros 5: At St. Louis, manager Tony La Russa earned his 2,126th win, breaking a tie with Joe McCarthy for fifth on the career list, as St. Louis swept Houston.

Reds 2, Marlins 1: At Miami, Brandon Claussen and three relievers combined on a four-hitter to help Cincinnati snap a three-game losing streak with a victory over Florida.

Nationals 11, Mets 4: At New York, Brad Wilkerson and Vinny Castilla each had four of Washington’s season-high 17 hits in a victory against New York. Wilkerson had a two-run homer, two singles and a double, while Castilla had three singles and an RBI double.

Brewers 8, Giants 5: At San Francisco, Carlos Lee homered twice, Jeff Cirillo added a two-run single and Milwaukee won its first series against San Francisco in four years.

Diamondbacks 8, Padres 6: At Phoenix, Troy Glaus went 3 for 5 with a pair of doubles and Tony Clark homered in a rare start to lead Arizona over San Diego.
