Quaker scores with Oatmeal Supreme
If the suggestion of oatmeal for breakfast evokes images of sticky wallpaper paste, Quaker Oatmeal Supreme might renovate that impression.
Quaker starts with thicker, heartier oats and stirs in fruit and nuts for its new line of Supreme oatmeal. Spokesman-Review reader food panel tasters savored the new breakfast offerings in a recent taste test of the Cinnamon Pecan and Apple Raisin flavors.
“I haven’t had oatmeal in ages but (I) might do so more regularly if I had this on hand. Good cinnamon flavor, not too sweet,” Donald Clegg said of the Cinnamon Pecan.
“(It) smells wonderful. (It has a) cinnamon, nutty taste,” Nancy Robinson added. “It would be great with half and half for a treat.”
These are not the instant packets for which Quaker is well-known. To make it, the oats must be cooked in the microwave for a minute and a half. Boiling water is not enough to cook it thoroughly.
The panel members tested the oatmeal made with water. The Cinnamon Pecan was tasty enough to earn four stars for flavor, but some panelists said they would have preferred the creamier version made with milk. A few said they might stir in some half and half. The Apple Raisin earned a slightly lower, three-and-a-half star rating.
“A very good nonmushy instant (oatmeal) with tasty cinnamon flavor and nuts. I’d buy it,” Vicki Deschaine said.
Skip Hubbard said the Apple Raisin flavor was a “great twist on an old favorite.” Larry Inman said he couldn’t taste the apples. “The added fruit doesn’t really add much to the flavor. Perhaps with half and half or cream it would be better.”
Quaker Oatmeal Supreme is offered in Banana Walnut flavor, as well.
