Cougars rally past Gonzaga to snap 7-game skid
Freshman Jayson Miller pitched two perfect innings and Washington State University snapped a seven-game losing streak Tuesday with a 7-3 non-conference baseball win over Gonzaga at Avista Stadium.
Miller (1-3) relieved in the second after the Bulldogs (18-11) took a 3-0 lead in the first.
Jim Murphy, Zach McAngus, Zach Kosturos and Jeff Miller had RBI singles for the Cougars (16-17) during a five-run fourth. Freshman Matthew Thomas added a two-run single in the eighth to help WSU take a 2-1 lead in the season series.
Will Ayala went 2 for 4 with an RBI for the Bulldogs.
Men’s golf
Redshirt junior David Fern finished at 4-over-par 220 and tied for 10th place while leading Washington State to second place at the 21-team Bite/Pacific Coast Intercollegiate at Lompoc, Calif.
Ryan Witz, who tied for 14th, had the best final-day round for the Cougars, an even-par 72 at La Purisima Golf Course.
WSU finished at 23-over 887, eight shots behind champion UC Davis.
Idaho placed 16th at 914.
Women’s golf
Sheena Prante fired a final-round, 5-over 77 to lead Eastern Washington to fifth place at the 13-team Fresno State Invitational at Riverbend Golf Course in Madera, Calif.
Prante tied for 10th place at 235, 19 shots behind champion Kay Hoey of Long Beach State. EWU (954) finished 36 shots behind Fresno State.
Mary Kate Morgan shot 241 and tied for 20th for 12th-place Gonzaga.
