Forum set Monday on CdA schools plan

From staff reports

A scaled-back version of the Coeur d’Alene School District’s elementary attendance zone plan will be presented at a public forum on Monday.

After public outcry at a forum in February, the district’s attendance zone committee revised its original plan, which would have moved hundreds of students to new elementary schools in the fall. The plan was developed in anticipation of the opening of Atlas Elementary and to help the district cope with overcrowding in its northern schools. Many students were being moved from Hayden Lake Elementary, set to close this summer, to Atlas. To leave room for growth in northern schools, though, the district had proposed sending some Hayden Lake students to a different school.

The proposal created a domino effect of change throughout the district at most every elementary school. The latest proposal allows most students to stay at the school they currently attend as the district explores building another elementary on the district’s west side.

The public forum begins at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Coeur d’Alene High School. The committee will consider comments from the forum and forward a final recommendation to the school board.
