Braves 6, Mets 3: At Atlanta, the Braves scored four runs in the seventh inning to defeat New York. The Braves broke a 2-all tie in the seventh. Andruw Jones doubled in the go-ahead run, and 46-year-old Julio Franco drove in another with a pinch-hit single off Eric Heilman.
Reds 4, Cubs 3 (12): At Chicago, Austin Kearns tied the game with a two-out double in the ninth, and hit a two-run homer in the 12th and Cincinnati dealt the Cubs a key loss in the wild-card race.
Phillies 8-8, Pirates 4-3: At Philadelphia, Chase Utley had three hits and two RBIs, and the Phillies rallied with a six-run seventh to complete a doubleheader sweep of Pittsburgh. In the opener, Todd Pratt hit a three-run homer and the Phillies beat the Pirates to clinch consecutive winning seasons for the first time in 21 years.
Brewers 4, Diamondbacks 1: At Phoenix, Geoff Jenkins homered and drove in two runs, and Luis Vizcaino worked out of a bases-loaded jam with no outs in the ninth to help Milwaukee snap a three-game skid with a win over Arizona.
Astros 6, Cardinals 4: At Houston, the Astros pushed closer to a playoff berth, winning their club-record 15th consecutive home game by beating St. Louis behind Jeff Kent (300th homer) and Jeff Bagwell (two RBIs).
Rockies 4, Dodgers 1: At Los Angeles, Jeromy Burnitz’s RBI single with one out in the ninth sparked a three-run rally, and Colorado beat Los Angeles to slow the Dodgers’ drive to their first playoff berth in eight years. Dodgers closer Eric Gagne, who has 45 saves in 47 chances, was unavailable after feeling stiffness in his right shoulder.
Padres 4, Giants 3 (10): At San Diego, Mark Loretta hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly with one out in the 10th and the Padres beat San Francisco to knock the Giants out of first place in the wild-card race. Houston leads by a half-game over the Giants and Cubs.
