RiverFair planned at Riverside High

The Riverside community and school district are hosting the fifth annual RiverFair, small-business expo and auto/motorcycle show from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Riverside High School, 34515 N. Newport Highway.

There will be games, kids’ crafts, raffles, door prizes, food and beverages and a barbecue meal available from 1 to 5 p.m.

Fire District 4 will be on hand with water hose games for the kids. Kids also can enjoy bouncy boxing, sumo wrestling, fishing derby, bouncy castle, face painting and a batting cage.

Political candidates and incumbents, both Republicans and Democrats will be on hand to answer questions.

There will be live music, dancing, a people parade and more.

RiverFair has drawn from 700 to 1,500 people in the past few years.

Minnehaha neighborhood meeting

A meeting on the prospect of forming a Minnehaha Neighborhood Council is set for Tuesday from 5 to 6 p.m. The meeting will be at Cooper Elementary School, 3200 N. Ferrall St.

There are 26 neighborhood councils in Spokane.

View University District plans

A community workshop to discuss the creation of Spokane’s University District is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday at the Avista Auditorium, 1411 E. Mission Ave.

A draft strategic master plan for the University District will be presented, and workshop participants will be encouraged to comment.

According to Tom Reese, economic development adviser for the city of Spokane, the draft plan will reflect ideas gathered through the first two workshops. Participants will hear about the planning principles and economic analysis for the University District, as well as input received from neighborhood councils.

“Comments gathered through this workshop will be used to hone the final draft, which will be presented at a public meeting, currently scheduled for Oct. 21,” Reese wrote in a press release.

Free parking for the workshop is available in the lots next to the Avista headquarters building. Attendees should use the front entrance to the building.

Hillyard leadership meeting

Hillyard neighbors and those from Morgan Acres, Nevada-Lidgerwood, Chief Garry Park and Logan neighborhoods are invited to attend the Hillyard Leadership Strategy meeting to be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m., Monday at the Northeast Community Center, 4001 N. Cook St.The purpose is to take steps to support group leaders and strengthen communication among and within Hillyard neighborhood groups.

Topics will include: looking at leadership needs of each group, leadership in transition needs, burn-out prevention strategies, communication strategies and planning the next steps.
