Sgt. Jacob Demand

Fort Lewis, Wash.

Memorial service for Army Sgt. Jacob H. Demand, 29, will be today at 7 p.m. at the Palouse (Wash.) High School gymnasium. Funeral will be Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Richardson-Brown Funeral Home in Pomeroy, Wash.

Sgt. Demand was killed in action in northern Iraq on Sept. 14.

He was born in the Navy Hospital in San Diego. He lived in Pomeroy, Wash., where he attended school through the second grade. In 1985 his family moved to Palouse, where he graduated from high school in 1995. In high school Sgt. Demand was active in sports, participating in football, basketball and baseball.

His hobbies included fishing and hunting.

Following graduation Sgt. Demand enlisted in the Army. He completed his basic training at Fort Benning, Ga., and was later stationed at Fort Campbell, Ky. He had served tours of duty in Saudi Arabia and Korea and most recently had been posted out of Fort Lewis, Wash.

He had been sent to Iraq in January with B Troop, 1st Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division. He was a vehicle commander on a Stryker and had been scheduled to return home in October.

While in the service Sgt. Demand had been married and divorced.

Survivors include three children, Reanne, Joshua and Seth, all of Brownsburg, Ind.; his parents, Char and Bruce Baldwin of Pullman and Keith Demand and Alice Bever of Tucson, Ariz.; two sisters, Torrey Cochrane of Pullman and Jolynn Gerardi of Windermere, Fla.; a brother, Tim Demand of Pullman; and his grandparents, Donna McDonald of San Diego, and Henry and Sherry Demand, and Merle and Janice Baldwin, all of Pomeroy.

Margery (Burig) Fulton

Coeur d’Alene

Memorial service for Margery Ann (Burig) Fulton, 71, will be today at 11 a.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran church in Hayden, Idaho. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Fulton died Sunday after a short bout with cancer.

She was born in Milwaukee, Wis. as the oldest of three children and is survived by two younger brothers, Robert and Donald.

She later moved to Pennsylvania with her parents, and she married Samuel Fulton in 1955.

She was a homemaker and became a mother when her daughter, Virginia was born in Dayton, Ohio, followed by the birth of her son, David, in Akron, Ohio.

The family settled in Missoula In 1971 and moved to Coeur d’Alene just over a year later.

Mrs. Fulton was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was active as a Sunday school teacher, organist and in various other capacities.

She later became a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church and enjoyed the support of her church family as she struggled for more than 42 years with multiple sclerosis.

She will be remembered as an inspiration to others.

Walter Abel

Otis Orchards

Funeral Mass for Walter F. Abel, 73, will be Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Roman Catholic Church. Private inurnment will be at Highland Cemetery in Norwood, Mass. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Abel, who was born in Norwood, died Sunday.

He was pastor for Catholic churches in the Spokane Diocese from 1958 to 1978, St. Agnes in Ritzville, Wash., St. Rose of Lima in Cheney and St. Mary in Spokane.

He left the priesthood in 1978 and married Donna Barrett on March 17 of that year. The couple moved to Oregon and lived in different areas until his retirement in 1996.

Mr. Abel was operations manager for the Chiles Foundation from 1981 to 1996. He and his wife lived in Green Valley, Ariz., until Mr. Abel became ill, and in 2001 they returned to Spokane.

He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Spokane Valley Rotary Club, Knights of Columbus and the Sheriffs Auxiliary in Green Valley from 1996 to 2001.

Survivors include his wife.

Helen Hamblen

Spokane

Memorial service for Helen Whitehouse Hamblen, 93, will be today at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hamblen, who died Thursday, attended the University of Idaho, where she was a member of Delta Gamma sorority.

In 1933 she married Herbert Hamblen.

A lifelong resident of Spokane, she was an active and sustaining member of the Junior League of Spokane, where she was involved in projects including the creation of the Volunteer Bureau and the Glover Field Recreational Center.

In 1971 she received the Junior League’s Outstanding Sustainer Award.

Until recently, Mrs. Hamblen was a board member of the Hutton Settlement. She was also a delegate to the Child Welfare Council and was a substitute teacher at the East Area Preschool.

In addition, she taught Sunday school at her church.

She served on the board of the Museum of Arts and Culture and was a museum volunteer and a volunteer in the Archives Department.

Her hobbies included reading, painting watercolors and weaving, and she was an avid student of philosophy and the arts.

Her husband died in 1994.

Survivors include a son, Laurence Hamblen of Eugene, Ore.; a daughter, Catherine Hamblen Rafferty of Spokane; a brother, Bruce Whitehouse; a brother-in-law, Frederick Gilbert; and two grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hutton Settlement, Spokane Parks Foundation, St. John’s Cathedral, Whitworth College or St. George’s School.

Janice Hutchinson

Deer Park

Memorial service for Janice Margaret Hutchinson, 61, will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Open Door Congregational Church in Deer Park. Lauer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hutchinson, who was born in Spokane, died Sunday. A former resident of Harrington, Wash., she had been a resident of Deer Park since 1966.

She graduated from Harrington High School in 1961.

In addition to being a homemaker, she helped her husband on the family dairy ranch in the Gardenspot area of Deer Park.

Mrs. Hutchinson was a former manager and member of the Deer Park Fair Association. She was also a member of the Spokane Holstein Association, Inland Empire Spring Dairy Show, Gardenspot Grange and FFA Alumni.

Survivors include her husband of 43 years, Wayne; five daughters, Kathy Walker of Cheney, Chris Bollema of Mount Vernon, Wash., and Carol Thompson, Donna Hutchinson and Kima Simonson, all of Deer Park; a sister, Virginia Stinnett of Sprague, Wash.; and 10 grandchildren.

Lorene Wolfe

Spokane

Memorial service for Lorene I. Wolfe, 66, will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Indian Trail Community Church, 9010 N. Indian Trail Road. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Wolfe, who died Sunday, was born in Lewistown, Mont. Her family moved from Lewistown to Polson, Mont., where she graduated from high school in 1955. After finishing high school, she received a diploma in secretarial science from Kinman Business University in 1956.

She married Dell Wolfe in 1957, and the couple made their home in Spokane later that year.

Mrs. Wolfe established a tax consulting business in 1980 and became an enrolled agent of the Internal Revenue Service.

She was a member of the National Society of Public Accountants, Washington Association of Accountants and the Spokane Chapter of Washington Association of Accountants. She chaired two committees and served as a member on various other committees in the WAA.

In 1997 Mrs. Wolfe sold her business and retired.

She was involved with the production and development of her own home decor items and taught herself tole painting. Her hobbies included gardening, flower arranging and various crafts.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Steven and Brian Wolfe, and her mother, Ethel Lanegan, all of Spokane; seven siblings and six grandchildren.

Verna McCracken Goff

Coeur d’Alene

Memorial service for Verna McCracken Goff, 90, will be today at 2 p.m. at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene.

Mrs. Goff, who was born in Mondak, Mont., died Tuesday.

She grew up and attended school in Bainville, Mont., and married Harvey Goff in 1932.

The couple settled in Dalton Gardens, Idaho, in 1942 and moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1950.

She was a 50-year member of the Community United Methodist Church, a charter member of the Eagles Auxiliary and a member of the Naomi Rebekah Lodge.

Her husband died in 1979.

Survivors include two daughters, Wilma Poole of Camano Island, Wash., and Elverna Towles of Yuma, Ariz.; two brothers, Gene McCracken of Billings and Bill McCracken of Mesa, Ariz.; a sister, Ina Johnson of Great Falls; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Raymond Smith

Clarkston

Funeral for Raymond DeLos Smith, 80, will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Bruning Funeral Home.

Mr. Smith, who was born in Pomeroy, Wash., died Monday.

He grew up in Hay, Wash., and attended school through ninth grade there. He graduated from Hill Military Academy in Portland, then attended one year at Washington State University, where he played freshman basketball.

He married Constance Daubert in 1946, and they made their home in Hay, where they ranched and raised Hereford cattle. They moved to LaCrosse, Wash., in 1963. His wife died in 1971.

He married Kay Irwin Rowley in 1975, and they later divorced.

Mr. Smith was active in the local

fair, where he raced chariots and enjoyed showing purebred Hereford cattle and Arabian horses. He was a longtime member of Washington State Cattlemen’s Association and was State Cattleman of the Year in 1960. He also served as Washington state director of the High School Rodeo Association.

He was a member of the Elks Lodge and was past master of the LaCrosse Masonic Lodge.

Mr. Smith had lived in Pomeroy and for the past 10 years in Clarkston.

Survivors include two sons, Harmon Smith of LaCrosse and Walter Smith of Bellevue, Wash.; three grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren.

Mel MacPhee

Kellogg

Memorial service for Mel MacPhee, 73, will be Friday at 2 p.m. At the American Lutheran Church in Kellogg. Shoshone Funeral Service in Kellogg is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. MacPhee, who was born in Kellogg, died Wednesday.

He graduated from Kellogg High School in 1948. In 1950 he enlisted in the Navy in 1950. He saw action in the waters off the coast of North Korea. During his military service he was involved in air-sea rescues, mine demolition and other activities.

He married Carolyn Whitwer in 1953, and attended North Idaho College and majored in accounting at University of Idaho.

Mr. MacPhee obtained his certifid public accountant designation and worked on the staff at H.F. Magnuson & Co. for many years.

He was a member of American Lutheran Church, Wallace Gyro Club and the Wallace Elks Lodge.

He served as a volunteer with Hospice of North Idaho.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, David of Fort Collins, Colo., and Alan of Coeur d’Alene; a brother, Wally; and three granddaughters.

Larry Becker

Spokane

Memorial service for Larry F. Becker, 62, will be today at 2 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sprague, Wash. Danekas Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Becker, who was born in Ritzville, Wash., died Friday.

He attended school in Sprague before attending Spokane Community College, where he studied body and fender repair.

Through the years he had lived in Colfax, Electric City and Oroville, Wash., and Spokane, where he worked for Stromberg Body and Fender.

Survivors include his companion of many years, Nora Becker of Spokane; two daughters Charlene and Christine Allison, both of Hedley, B.C.; his mother, Clara Becker of Sprague; and six grandchildren.

Melba Shahan

Spokane

Funeral for Melba Hall Shahan, 78, will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Steptoe (Wash.) Community Church. Bruning Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Shahan, who died Monday, was born in Steptoe.

She grew up on the family farm near Steptoe and graduated from high school there in 1944.

She married Dwayne Shahan in 1945, and the couple farmed and raised horses near Steptoe.

Mrs. Shahan was active in Colfax and Pullman bowling leagues and served as league secretary for many years.

She and her husband were active members of the Whitman County Sheriff’s Posse and the Palouse Empire Rodeo. They served as grand marshals of the Palouse Empire Fair in 1989.

Mrs. Shahan enjoyed sewing, crocheting, embroidery and making afghans, and was a member of Steptoe Community Church.

Survivors include her husband; four daughters, Sharon Hankins and Darcia Waples, both of Spokane, Leslie Lamb of Endicott, Wash., and Pam Ledbetter of Medical Lake; two brothers, Erwin and Cedric Hall, both of Steptoe; a sister, Marge Boetcher of Hoquiam, Wash.; and 10 grandchildren.

Joe Estinson

Spokane

Memorial service for Joe “G.J.” Estinson Jr., 86, will be Saturday at noon at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South.

Mr. Estinson, who died Sept. 12, was a lifelong resident of Spokane.

He graduated from Gonzaga Preparatory High School in 1936 and received his pilot’s license at Felts Field in 1939.

Mr. Estinson was a navigator in the Army Air Corps in World War II.

He and his wife, Marie, owned Marie’s Gift Shop and Dee’s Motel for many years. He later retired as a salesman from Norcrest China.

His wife died in 1991.

Survivors include a son, Joe Estinson of Spokane Valley; numerous grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Jonathan Huebel

Spokane

Visitation for Jonathan Evans Huebel, 20, will be today from noon to 8 p.m. at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Huebel died Sept. 16 in Bremerton. He was born in Spokane and resided here most of his life.

He attended Rosalia (Wash.) and Rogers high schools, and worked as a general laborer in construction.

Survivors include a daughter, Halie Huebel; his parents, Paul and Elizabeth Branham; and a sister, Sarah Branham, all of Spokane; and his grandmothers, Margaret Ann Williams of Moscow, Idaho, and Frances Branham of Merlin, Ore.

Eda (Rooney) Shultz

Cataldo, Idaho

Memorial service for Eda I. (Rooney) Shultz, 83, will be Friday at 5 p.m. at the Kellogg Funeral Chapel.

Mrs. Shultz, who was born in Snow, N.D., died Sunday.

She married Elwin Shultz in 1942, and in 1945 they moved from California to Rockford Bay, Idaho.

The couple settled in Kellogg in 1949, and she worked as the shop teacher at Opportunity School in Silverton, Idaho.

Mrs. Shultz also was a homemaker.

She was active in the Kellogg Ladies Bowling League, the Mine Mill Local 18 Ladies Auxiliary and Silver Valley Peoples Action Coalition.

Survivors include her husband; four children, Penny Miller of Yuma, Ariz., Patty Moore of Columbia Falls, Mont., Dan Shultz of Absarokee, Mont., and Jim Shultz of Priest River, Idaho; a brother, Melvin Krogh of Ojai, Calif.; a sister, Rusty Wright of Vancouver, Wash.; 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Allen Rueb

Spokane

Memorial service for Allen E. Rueb, 60, will be today at 3 p.m. at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home.

Mr. Rueb, who was born in Herreid, S.D., died Friday. He was a resident of the Spokane area for 40 years.

He was a member of the South Dakota National Guard and served in the Army at Fort Polk, La.

Mr. Rueb worked for Kaiser for 39 years.

He was a member of the Eagles Lodge and the Colbert Grange and enjoyed fishing and making German and summer sausage.

Survivors include a son, Chad Rueb of Mead; two daughters, Terri Fowler of Colbert and Tina Reeb of Spokane; two brothers, Lloyd Rueb of Wisconsin and Vern Rueb of Texas; a sister, Ardella Walther of Oklahoma; and eight grandchildren
