Titans take first at Kentlake tourney

University’s volleyball team took first place at the Kentlake Invitational, finishing first in pool play and then defeating Issaquah, Ferris, White River and Spanaway Lake on its way to the title.

The Titans received strong contributions from Mandy Daniels, Daidre Mendenhall and Kara Crisp. Shadle Park finished the tournament in third place and Ferris came in seventh. The Saxons were perfect in pool play, but then dropped matches to U-Hi and Kentridge before knocking off Snohomish for seventh.

In the Great Northern League, Lakeside defeated visiting Riverside (1-3, 1-1 GNL) 22-25, 25-22, 25-9 and 25-21. The Eagles (2-2, 2-1 GNL) got 17 kills from freshman Kelli Tikker and 46 assists from sophomore Lindsay Jelke. Senior Belinda Buchholz had 13 digs to lead Lakeside’s defensive effort. … Chewelah (2-0, 2-0 GNL) coasted to an easy 25-13, 25-9, 25-17 win at Medical Lake (2-3, 0-3 GNL). … At the Blackhawk Invitational in Cheney, Pullman beat Rogers, Deer Park, Cheney and its own junior varsity squad to finish first. The Greyhounds landed Casey Olson and Amy Small on the all-tournament team.

Football

Tiny Moses scored three times to lead Wellpinit to a 46-28 B-8 win over visiting Thorp-Easton. Moses caught two touchdown passes for the Redskins (1-2), a 48-yarder from Sage Sonneck and a 58-yarder from T.J. Flett. Moses also scored on a 41-yard run in the second quarter.

Idaho volleyball

Cassie Duncan led Lakeland with 16 kills and 28 digs as the Hawks (5-2, 3-2 IEL) defeated Moscow (3-2, 3-1) in an Inland Empire League match 13-25, 25-21, 26-24 and 25-20. … Visiting Sandpoint (2-2, 2-2) took down Lewiston (1-5, 1-5) 21-25, 25-18, 25-22 and 25-17 behind the late serving of Kelsey James.

Idaho girls soccer

Coeur d’Alene (5-2-0, 3-0-0 IEL) remained undefeated in IEL play, knocking off visiting Lewiston (2-4-1, 0-4-0) 3-0. … Lake City (1-4-3, 1-1-1) tied visiting Lakeland (4-2-1, 3-2-1 IEL) 1-1.

Idaho boys soccer

Visiting Coeur d’Alene (4-2-1, 2-0-1 IEL) destroyed Lewiston (0-4-1, 0-4-0) 4-0 behind a hat trick from Joe Hanich. … Lake City (4-1-1, 2-1-0) held off a furious Lakeland (0-7-1, 0-5-1) rally for a 4-3 win in Rathdrum. Cody Steele had two goals and an assist for the Timberwolves.

Junior hockey

The Spokane Braves bounced back from an opening-season loss in a big way, scoring five times in the third period and shutting out Grand Forks 9-0 in Grand Forks, B.C.

Scott Rensmon scored twice and dished out three assists, and Brandon Tyer stopped 27 shots in the win. Seven Braves scored a goal apiece, and Sam Read also had three assists to push the Braves to 1-1 on the season.
