The Spokesman-Review

Padres 5, Giants 1: At San Francisco, Barry Bonds added another home run to his impressive total a day after hitting career homer No. 700, but San Diego’s Jay Payton hit a tiebreaking, three-run shot in the seventh to lead the Padres past San Francisco.

Reds 6, Cubs 5: At Cincinnati, Wily Mo Pena hit two homers to offset a pair by Moises Alou and lead Cincinnati over Chicago. The Reds scored five runs in the sixth to back Aaron Harang (9-9). Harang gave up six hits, walked three and struck out six in six innings.

Cardinals 7, Diamondbacks 0: At St. Louis, St. Louis became the first major league team to clinch a playoff spot this season, winning the Central for the third time in five seasons. The playoff spot came a few hours after beating Arizona, when the Cubs lost.

Astros 4, Brewers 3: At Houston, Jeff Bagwell homered and drove in three runs, becoming the 29th player in major league history to both score and drive in 1,500 runs, and Houston rallied to beat Milwaukee. Bagwell had an RBI single in the third, and his two-run homer in the fifth gave him 1,502 RBIs and 1,500 runs scored – and put the Astros ahead for good.

Rockies 8, Dodgers 1: At Denver, Joe Kennedy pitched seven innings of four-hit ball and had a two-run triple in a five-run seventh, helping Colorado beat Los Angeles. Los Angeles managed just five hits to Colorado’s 16.

Braves 4, Marlins 2: At Miami, Jaret Wright allowed three hits in 8 1/3 innings, and Atlanta dealt another blow to Florida’s fading hopes in the wild-card race. Wright (15-7) struck out five, walked one, hit a batter and won for the second time in nine career outings against the Marlins.

Mets 8, Pirates 7 (10): At Pittsburgh, Mike Cameron’s sacrifice fly in the 10th drove in the go-ahead run, leading New York over Pittsburgh. After the Mets blew an early 7-0 lead, Cameron flied out to deep center with one out against Salomon Torres (7-5), scoring Wilson Delgado from third base.

Expos 6, Phillies 5 (14): At Philadelphia, Tony Batista’s two-out RBI single in the 14th lifted Montreal to a victory over Philadelphia. Batista finished 4 for 6, falling a home run short of the cycle. Terrmel Sledge homered and drove in three runs for Montreal. Chad Cordero (6-3) allowed one hit in three innings. Francis Beltran pitched the 14th for his first career save.
