Sam Houston too much for No. 1 Griz

Dustin Long passed for 329 yards and two touchdowns and Stevie Smith ran for 113 yards and two scores as Sam Houston State held off No.1-ranked Montana 41-29 Saturday night in Huntsville, Texas.

Unranked Sam Houston (2-1) jumped to a 20-3 halftime lead on Smith’s 11-yard TD run and a 9-yard pass from Long to Vin Cartwright.

Long went 26 of 33 and wasn’t intercepted or sacked. Jarrod Fuller was his top receiver with 10 catches for 133 yards.

After Smith’s 3-yard run put Sam Houston up 41-10, Montana (2-1) rallied for three scores in the final 8:47.

Idaho St. 49, N Colorado 42 (OT)

Mark Hetherington connected with Akilah Lacey on a 13-yard touchdown pass with 25 seconds left in the game and again in overtime as the Bengals (1-2) held off the Bears (1-2) in Greeley, Colo.

Akilah’s last-minute score to force overtime capped a 95-yard, 14-play drive. He later caught a 9-yard pass from Hetherington in overtime.

Idaho State’s defense and special teams scored 21 unanswered points in less than 5 minutes to overcome a 34-14 late third quarter deficit.

Cal Poly 27, Montana St. 14

Adam Martinez rushed for 87 yards, including a 6-yard TD run with 2 minutes remaining, to seal the Mustangs’ victory over the Bobcats in Bozeman, Mont.

Cal Poly (3-0), ranked 22nd, has beaten No. 14 Montana State (1-1) six straight times.

UC Davis 31, Weber St. 29

Quarterback Jon Grant threw for 311 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Aggies (2-0) to a win over the Wildcats (0-3) in Ogden, Utah.

Weber State trailed 28-10 at halftime before quarterback Jeff Fowler sparked the Wildcats to score 19 unanswered points to take the lead at 29-28.

Sac. St. 23, Southern Utah 17

Fred Amey caught a pair of touchdown passes, including a 50-yard game winner with just under 6 minutes left, as the Hornets (1-1) beat the Thunderbirds (1-1) in Sacramento, Calif.

Ameycaught eight passes for 158 yards to eclipse 3,000 receiving yards for his career.
