Lakeland closes in on Moscow with win

Cassie Duncan led Lakeland with 16 kills and 28 digs as the Hawks defeated Moscow in an Inland Empire League match 13-25, 25-21, 26-24 and 25-20. With the win, Lakeland (5-2, 3-2 IEL) pulled within a half-game of the Bears (3-2, 3-1 IEL) for second in the league behind idle Lake City.

Visiting Sandpoint (2-2, 2-2 IEL) took down Lewiston 21-25, 25-18, 25-22 and 25-17 behind the late serving of Kelsey James. Mei Fong had eight kills, four aces, 14 digs and three blocks for the Bengals (1-5, 1-5 IEL). … Mullan (3-3, 3-1 North Star League) dispatched Coeur d’Alene Charter (0-4, 0-4 NSL) 25-27, 25-17, 25-16, 25-15. Anali Carrico had 13 kills and three blocks in the win. … St. Maries fell in the championship match of the Okanogan Invitational to Lynden Christian in three games 25-19, 19-25, 15-12. The Lumberjacks knocked off Omak, Newport and Toutle Lake on their way to the title game. Kelsi Lee had 33 kills, 16 digs and 17 blocks in the tournament for the Lumberjacks. Jenna Robinson added 21 kills and 10 digs. … At the Rosalia Tournament, Kootenai fell to Northwest Christian 25-18, 25-23 in the championship match. Wallace defeated the hosts in the third-place match 25-9, 25-23 and Colfax JV beat Kellogg 25-21, 25-18 in the fifth-place match. Kami Wendt of Kellogg and Darcy Collins of Kootenai made the tourney all-star team.

Girls soccer

Coeur d’Alene remained undefeated in IEL play, knocking off visiting Lewiston (2-4-1, 0-4-0 IEL) 3-0. Jamiee Myers scored a pair of goals for the Vikings (5-2-0, 3-0-0 IEL), and Courtney Walker added a goal and an assist. … Lake City (1-4-3, 1-1-1 IEL) tied visiting Lakeland (4-2-1, 3-2-1 IEL) 1-1. … Jennifer Putman and Anya Kompotich scored goals for Bonners Ferry (1-2-0, 1-0-0 Intermountain League) in a 2-0 win at home against St. Maries (0-6-1, 0-1-1 IML). Aubry Hoover was perfect in goal for the Badgers, saving seven shots. … Sandpoint went on the road and tied Timberline of Boise 2-2. Kylie France opened the scoring in the first half for the Bulldogs (6-2-1), and Allison Gillis put Sandpoint on top in the second half before Timberline tied the game in the 70th minute. … In a non-league match, Post Falls (4-4-0) knocked off visiting Lakeside (Wash.) (0-3) 2-1.

Boys soccer

Visiting Coeur d’Alene destroyed Lewiston (0-4-1, 0-4-0 IEL) 4-0 behind a hat trick from Joe Hanich. The Vikings (4-2-1, 2-0-1 IEL) also got two assists from Mike Vredenburg to stay undefeated in league play. … Lake City held off a furious Lakeland rally for a 4-3 win in Rathdrum. Cody Steele had two goals and an assist as the Timberwolves (4-1-1, 2-1-0 IEL) built a 4-0 lead, but the Hawks (0-7-1, 0-5-1 IEL) scored three goals in a 14-minute span to make it close. … Jose Barajas scored four goals to lead Bonners Ferry to an easy 5-0 win at home against St. Maries (5-4-0, 0-2-0 IML). Barajas scored in the 25th minute, then added his final three in a 23-minute span in the second half for the Badgers (3-2-1, 2-0-0 IML).

Washington volleyball

University took first place at the Kentlake Invitational, finishing first in pool play and then defeating Issaquah, Ferris, White River and Spanaway Lake on its way to the title. The Titans received strong contributions from Mandy Daniels, Daidre Mendenhall and Kara Crisp. Shadle Park finished the tournament in third place and Ferris came in seventh. The Saxons were perfect in pool play, but then dropped matches to U-Hi and Kentridge before knocking off Snohomish for seventh. … In the Great Northern League, Lakeside defeated visiting Riverside (1-3, 1-1 GNL) 22-25, 25-22, 25-9 and 25-21. The Eagles (2-2, 2-1 GNL) got 17 kills from freshman Kelli Tikker and 46 assists from sophomore Lindsay Jelke.
