Dear Collector: The Mickey Mouse comic book in this picture is in perfect shape. What is it worth today?

From the Golden Age of comics, this 1939 Disney promotional book celebrating Independence Day was printed by KK/Western Publishing in the larger magazine format. As usual with determining the value of most collectibles, condition is all important. Your mag might make as much as $500 or maybe more.

Dear Collector: This photo contains pottery I bought at auction more than 25 years ago for $3. None of the pieces are marked except the flour canister which has an almost illegible “Purintine” stamped on the underside.

Change that to Purinton, a Pennsylvania company in business from 1941 to 1959. These pieces are in the apple and pear pattern, hand painted at the pottery’s Shippenville factory. Current value is way in excess of your original purchase price, probably totaling over $100 for the five items.

Dear Collector: I have a 1934A Federal Reserve $20 in very good condition; could you give the price on it?

Bearing the signatures of Treasurer W.A. Julian and Secretary of Treasury Henry Morgenthau, the A series note for that year would have a value of about $60-$75 uncirculated, but in all likelihood your bill would be considered fine or very fine, which would make it worth $25 or $30.

Dear Collector: We have no idea how old the plaster mask in the enclosed photos is, or what its’ worth; can you tell us?

Pictured on page 552 of “Warmans’ Antiques & Collectibles Price Guide” (Krause, 2004, $19.99), what you’ve got is a Shirley Temple chalkware string holder, which once spooled out twine or string for package tying. Editor Ellen T. Schroy attaches a value of $395 to this figural fantasy.

Dear Collector: According to family tradition, this platter, made by Edward Clarke, was a wedding present to my great grandmother back in the 1800’s. Was this company in existence then?

The answer to your question is yes; because since its establishment under that name in1865, this Staffordshire pottery turned out a regular supply of opaque or semi-porcelain for the next twenty years.

Dear Collector: My Dad gave me a “Deputy Dawg” game that was his when he was a kid. It looks like it’s in good shape, with all the pieces still in the box. What do you think it’s worth?

Your circa 1960 board game by Milton Bradley features the Terrytoon character voiced by comedian Dayton Allen. This animated television series ran from 1959 to 1972, quite a long run for a cartoon. Listed in one price guide at $45; the box and contents must be in near mint condition. In 1960 the late Roy Orbison topped the record charts with his hit, “Only the Lonely.” That year also saw the introduction of “The Twist,” sung by Chubby Checker; which was the first popular Rock and Roll dance.
