Tacoma photographer wins Cowles Cup
SEATTLE – Janet Jensen, a photographer for The News Tribune in Tacoma, has been named the winner of the Cowles Cup for the top entry in the 2004 Washington-Oregon Associated Press photo contest.
Jensen’s picture story “Dori and Me,” of a young woman dying of AIDS, was judged the best among all first-place winners in the contest, which was open to daily newspapers in Oregon and Washington that are members of the Associated Press.
Another sweepstakes award went to Mike Urban of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Urban’s “One Glad Grad” won the Reid Blackburn Memorial award for best feature photo in the contest.
Photographers from The Register-Guard in Eugene, Ore., and the Tri-City Herald in Washington won first-place awards in spot news photography.
The contest winners were announced Friday by AP Chiefs of Bureau Bryan Brumley, in Portland, and Nancy Roberts Trott, in Seattle.
