McKinsey carries Bears to comeback soccer win

Central Valley staked host Clarkston to an early lead, but turned Jenny McKinsey loose for two goals and an assist during a 3-1 win in Greater Spokane League girls soccer Friday.

McKinsey evened the match midway through the first half, feeding freshman Justine Bowman for a goal. The junior midfielder scored the go-ahead goal in the 70th minute, and added an insurance goal a minute later for the Bears (8-2, 5-2). Clarkston dropped to 0-8, 0-7.

In other GSL matches, five Saxons found the back of the net as unbeaten Ferris (8-0, 7-0) blanked visiting Shadle Park 5-0. Aly Spear scored the game-winning goal in the 17th minute. The Highlanders (2-6, 2-5) fired off nine shots in the second half, with Ferris goalkeeper Liz Boyden making five saves to earn the shutout. … Stacey Hamer dribbled through two defenders and around the goalkeeper to score the game-winner for Gonzaga Prep in a 3-0 decision over visiting Cheney (4-4, 3-4). Sophomore Caitlin Davis added her first goal of the season from 20 yards out for the Bullpups (7-1-1, 6-1). … Mead won its fourth consecutive match, stopping visiting University 4-2. Freshman Jaimye Etten had a hat trick for the Panthers (5-2, 5-3), adding an assist on the team’s fourth goal. The Titans (7-2, 5-2) were blanked until the 54th minute, when junior Alex Marquard scored an unassisted goal. … With the score tied in the 71st minute, Titi Ala took the ball at midfield, deked past two West Valley defenders, cut back and beat the goalkeeper to the near post for a 3-2 victory for North Central (6-3, 4-3). It was Ala’s third goal of the season, all this week. WV dropped to 2-6, 1-6. … Lewis and Clark (4-5, 3-4) had five players score during its 5-0 win at Rogers (0-7, 0-7). Midfielder Carley Reed scored 1 minute into the contest. … East Valley’s scheduled match at Mt. Spokane was postponed because EV coach Jeff Rose is getting married this weekend.

Volleyball

West Valley (2-7) swept past visiting Cheney 25-16, 25-14, 25-10 in the GSL. WV’s Melody Dosey served up six aces and added seven kills and four blocks. Cheney dropped to 1-8.
