Matlock gets 700th career win
CC Spokane coach Irene Matlock got her 700th career coaching victory, as CCS (13-9) took both its matches at the Spokane Crossover tournament Friday at Spokane Falls. North Idaho College (17-12) was also perfect, sweeping Clark and Southwest Oregon.
It took five games for the Sasquatch to put away Lower Columbia, and CCS made the 700th win a big one, sweeping Skagit Valley 30-22, 30-9, 30-15.
Jennifer Woelk had 30 kills and Sybresha Branch contributed 25 for the Sasquatch.
•Sarah Meek had 15 kills on .400 hitting percentage, but it wasn’t enough to get Idaho a road win, as the Vandals (8-4, 2-2 Big West) fell 30-21, 30-21, 27-30, 30-21 at UC Irvine.
Kati Tikker had 17 kills and Saxony Brown had 12 to help Idaho’s attack.
•Washington State’s Pac-10 struggles continued as WSU fell to Oregon State 27-30, 30-18, 30-27, 35-33.
The host Cougars (3-12, 0-3 Pac-10) got 18 kills and 11 digs from Kelly Rosin, and 14 kills, four aces and seven blocks from Jennifer Todd.
After a good first game to take the early lead, the Cougars fell apart, hitting -.030 in the second game.
•Gonzaga put together a solid effort, but fell short of the upset at No. 13 Santa Clara, dropping the match 23-30, 30-28, 30-24, 23-30, 15-6.
Christina Davis led the Bulldogs (4-10, 0-1 WCC) with 14 kills and 10 digs in only three games, and Emilee Gihring pitched in 46 assists and seven blocks.
The Broncos outhit Gonzaga in the decisive game .467 to .067.
•Julie Marsh had 13 kills and 15 digs, and Natalie Danielson added 10 digs as visiting Whitworth swept Puget Sound 30-20, 30-23, 30-26 in.
Rebekah Hornor added 32 assists for the Pirates (11-2, 4-1 NWC)
•No. 2 Washington ran its winning streak to 11 matches with a 30-19, 30-15, 30-25 sweep of visiting Oregon.
Brie Hagerty had 19 kills and a match-high .607 hitting percentage for the Huskies (11-0, 3-0 Pac-10).
Women’s soccer
Alicia Ward scored a hat trick and Kristen Kendall and Jamison Walton chipped in a goal and an assist apiece as North Idaho (5-5, 4-3) rolled to an easy 9-0 win against Everett at Spokane Falls.
•Pacific shut down Idaho’s scoring attack, beating the Vandals 2-0 at Stockton, Calif.
Idaho (2-6-0, 0-1-0 BWC) outshot Pacific 15-13, led by six shots from Jenny Springer, two of which forced saves.
•After 81 minutes of scoreless soccer, Oregon State finally broke through to beat Gonzaga 1-0 in a non-league game at Corvallis, Ore.
The loss is the second in a row for the Bulldogs (7-4), the first time they have had a losing streak this season.
•Haley Thompson-Miller scored in the 73rd minute to tie the game, and Washington State (5-2-2) hung on through double overtime for a 1-1 non-league tie with Loyola Marymount in Pullman.
Substitute Brooke Bemis gathered a loose ball, and found Thompson-Miller, who nailed a one-timer from 15 feet to earn the tie. LMU outshot the Cougars 20-12.
Katie Hultin made eight saves to preserve the tie for WSU.
Men’s soccer
Derek Taylor headed in a throw-in from Jake Walker in the 65th minute, and Lamar Kumangai-McGee had two assists to lead North Idaho (6-1-2, 5-1-1 NWAACC) to a 4-0 win over Everett in Coeur d’Alene.
Garga Caserta, Tyson Merrill and Ian Songer also scored for the Cards.
•Gonzaga extended its West Coast Conference losing streak to nine games over the past three years, falling 2-0 on the road to Loyola Marymount.
LMU outshot the Bulldogs (4-5, 0-1) 12-9.
•Kris Wright starred for CC Spokane, making seven saves to preserve a scoreless tie at home against Treasure Valley.
The Sasquatch (3-1-2 NWAACC) managed 16 shots on the Chukars.
Golf
Former Ritzville golfer Ryan Benzel, now of Seattle Golf Club, teamed up with Jack Lamey to win the Pacific Northwest PGA Pro-Am Championship in a playoff.
