Fred Herman

Spokane

Funeral for Fred Herman, 89, will be at 11 a.m. today at the Pines Mausoleum, 1402 S. Pines Road. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Herman, who died last Monday, was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta.

He attended Sheridan Elementary School, Libby Junior High and North Central High School.

He worked as a woodcutter during the Depression and later was a butcher, a fireman and a locomotive engineer for the Northern Pacific and Burlington Northern railroads. He also owned several small businesses.

Mr. Herman was a member of the Brotherhood of Firemen and Locomotive Engineers.

He was preceded in death by two wives, Anne Collier Herman and Jeannie Blodgett Herman.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of Port Angeles, Wash.; two sons, Gary of Spokane Valley and Lloyd of Liberty Lake; two stepsons, Gary Velie of Port Angeles and Ralph Velie of Seattle; a brother, Howard of Spokane Valley; a sister, Lois Beal of Yuma, Ariz.; granddaughter and caregiver Erin Miller; and numerous grandchildren, stepgrandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

Kathleen Roberts

Spokane

Memorial service for Kathleen P. Roberts, 84, will be at 2 p.m. today at Faith Bible Church, 600 W. Cora Ave. Hennessey Valley Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Roberts, who died on Nov. 21, was an 84-year resident of Spokane.

She was a member of Faith Bible Church and was involved with Rainbow Girl Mothers.

She also enjoyed square dancing.

Mrs. Roberts was preceded in death by her two husbands, Roy Barrett and Richard Roberts.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Tillberg of Elk Creek, Idaho; a stepson, Will Roberts of Everett; three brothers, Bruce Mann of Spokane, Barney Quinn of Plummer, Idaho, and Marvin Quinn of Dallas; a sister, Adalor Gibb of Seattle; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions can be made to Faith Bible Church.

Joanne Cody

Spokane Valley

Graveside service for Joanne Cody, 83, will be at 1 p.m. today at Riverside Mausoleum Chapel. Hennessey Valley Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Cody, who died last Monday, was born in Wisconsin and lived in the Spokane area for more than 70 years.

She enjoyed knitting, painting, crocheting, fishing, gardening and traveling.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Mariano Cody.

Survivors include her sons, Jack LaSalle of Veradale and Joe LaSalle of Spokane; two daughters, Donna Beck of Spokane and Bobby Jean Adams of Diamond Lake, Wash.; 16 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Nettie Volavka

Spokane

Graveside service for Nettie C. Volavka, 85, will be today at 11:30 a.m. at Fairmount Memorial Park. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Volavka, who died on Monday, was born in Bozeman and had lived in Spokane since 1962.

She married Richard L. Volavka in 1939 in Ukiah, Calif., and the couple moved to North Idaho, where they raised their children.

She was a full-time homemaker and loved to bake and sew.

Her husband died in 2003.

Survivors include two daughters, Pattylou of Spokane and Carole of Usk, Wash.; 17 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Leo Murray

Spokane

Funeral Mass for Leo George Murray, 76 will be at 1 p.m. today at Assumption of Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, 3624 W. Indian Trail Road. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Murray, who died Tuesday, was born in Dunseith, N.D., and had lived in Spokane since 1950.

He graduated from Dunseith High School in 1947.

He worked as a mail freight adminstrator for the Great Northern and Burlington Northern railroads and was an avid Seattle Mariners fan.

Survivors include his brother, John of Spokane.

Joan Mae Raska

Colville

Funeral for Joan Mae Raska, 79, will be at 1 p.m. today at the Danekas Funeral Chapel in Colville.

Mrs. Raska, who died Tuesday, was a lifetime resident of Colville.

Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Joseph; a son, Rod of Spokane; a daughter, Sharon Loan of Colville; three sisters, Jean Flugel of Colville, Beverly Soja of Sun Valley, Calif., and Betty Hoffsmith of Tucson, Ariz.; and three grandchildren.
