Ducks cruise past Thundering Herd
Freshman Bryce Taylor scored 18 points to lead five Oregon players in double figures and the Ducks breezed to an 89-69 victory over Marshall on Saturday night in Charleston, W. Va.
Aaron Brooks added 16 points and freshman Malik Hairston had 15 for Oregon (3-0). Ian Crosswhite scored 13 and freshman Chamberlain Oguchi scored 11.
Oregon, which has no seniors, led the entire game and made 61 percent of its shots, including 13 of 21 3-pointers. The much-taller Ducks held a 37-22 rebounding advantage.
Oregon scored the final 10 points of the first half to jump ahead 39-24.
The Thundering Herd closed the gap to eight midway through the second half before Brooks, who had 13 points in the second half, hit a pair of 3-pointers and Marshall never threatened again.
Mark Patton and Tre Whitted had 17 points apiece for Marshall (1-2).
The game was the second in a two-year, neutral-site agreement between the schools.
Oregon beat Marshall last year 90-61 in Portland, Ore.
Arizona St. 87, Vanderbilt 68: At Las Vegas, Ike Diogu had game-highs of 30 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Sun Devils (3-1) over the Commodores (3-2) in the third-place game of the Las Vegas Holiday Invitational.
Diogu went 8 for 10 from the field and 14 for 16 from the free-throw line.
Also for Arizona State, Steve Moore had 20 points and made 4 of 6 from 3-point range, Kevin Kruger added 15 points and Serge Angounou scored 13.
Arizona State shot 28 of 48 from the field for 58.3 percent and was 8 of 12 from 3-point range for 66.7 percent.
Alex Gordon led Vanderbilt with 16 points, going 3 of 5 from 3-point range, and Mario Moore and Shan Foster had 10 points apiece.
Arizona St. built its largest lead at 61-38 with 12:15 to go in the game.
Arizona State finished 3-1 in the Invitational, Vanderbilt 2-2.
UCLA 76, UC Irvine 65: At Los Angeles, Aaron Afflalo scored four of his 14 points in the final 3:03 and Dijon Thompson clinched it with three free throws with 52 seconds left to help the Bruins (3-0) hold off the stubborn Anteaters (1-2).
Thompson and Jordan Farmar also has 14 points each for UCLA, off to its first 3-0 start since 1999-00. Center Michael Fey scored all 13 of his points in the first half.
The Bruins’ three victories have come against teams that were a combined 26-62 last season.
A win Tuesday night against Long Beach State at Pauley Pavilion would give the Bruins their first 4-0 start since 1994-95, when they won their first six games, finished 31-1 under coach Jim Harrick and captured their 11th NCAA championship.
Aaron Fitzgerald scored 17 points for Irvine.
California 67, BYU 64: At Provo, Utah, Richard Midgley scored 15 points to lead the Golden Bears (3-1) to a win over the Cougars (1-3), breaking Brigham Youngs’ streak of 18 straight home wins.
They also broke a 40-game home winning streak against non-conference opponents for BYU. The last non-conference opponent to beat the Cougars at home was California in 1998.
Rod Benson added 14, DeVon Hardin scored 12 and Marquise Kately had 10 for the Golden Bears.
BYU’s Mike Hall scored a career-high 23 points in a losing effort, and Jensen scored 12.
California built a 6-1 lead and never trailed.
