Young Republicans organize food drive

Laura Umthun Correspondent

We have all missed a meal from time to time – but imagine how it would feel to have no food or no money to buy food.

Economic conditions continue to have a negative impact on the problems of hunger and homelessness, and demand for food assistance is expected to be high this holiday season.

Vinny Zito, Josten Cornett and Tyrel Melvin, all members of the North Idaho College Young Republicans, are helping out by encouraging anyone in the community to contribute to the first NIC Young Republicans Canned Food Drive.

The drive began Nov. 8 and continues through Dec. 6.

“We have collected more than 200 cans of food and six turkeys already,” says Zito, the club president. All donated items will be given to local food banks.

Club members are on duty to collect cans Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Edminster Student Union Building located on the North Idaho College campus.

According to Mark Haberman, program manager for the Community Action Partnership Food Bank of Coeur d’Alene, “The community continues to provide strong support for our Food Bank, however, our food donations have been relatively level over the past few years alongside a need that is increasing by double-digit percentages each year.”

The most needed items are high-protein items such as peanut butter, canned tuna, ham or chicken, canned stew, chili or soups. Canned dairy products, dried fruits and vegetables, beans, rice, pasta, crackers and cereal are also in demand.

Perishable food items continue to be in strong demand. The Food Bank encourages financial donations so they may purchase these items themselves and distribute them to needy individuals.

“Every food item is a needed item,” says Haberman. “Over 4,000 families or approximately 11,000 individuals come through our doors one or more times a year. Supply does not keep up with the increase in demand.”

Any NIC student who brings in at least five cans will receive a ticket for a chance to win a $350 scholarship. The drawing will take place on Dec. 6. The scholarship can be applied as a credit toward tuition costs for the spring semester.

The Young Republicans have 30 members who are very active in various community projects.

“Many of our club members have donated many hours to this important food drive,” says Zito.
