NIC stays alive in NJCAA volleyball

North Idaho College advanced in the losers’ bracket of the NJCAA Division I volleyball championships Monday with a three-game win over Temple College in a loser-out match.

The Cardinals, who whipped Temple 30-22, 30-21, 30-26, will play the winner of a match between Texas-Brownsville and Northwest-Shoals from Alabama.

NIC, the No. 11 seed, lost its opener to No. 6 Southwest Missouri State-West Plains, which is the host school, 30-23, 32-30, 30-24. Colleen Dornan had 10 kills and 13 assists and Kelsey Kinzer had 13 digs for NIC.

In the win over Temple, Dornan and Jessica Holland had 10 kills each, Kara Kiefer had 18 digs and Kinzer 12. Dornan also added 19 assists and Tiana Maua 17 after collecting 16 in the first match.

Soccer

North Idaho College one woman and three men selected to Northeast Division teams for the NWAACC All-Star games Dec. 4 in Tukwila, Wash.

NIC players selected were Alicia Ward to the women’s team and Garga Caserta, Lamar Kumangai-McGee (North Central) and Peter Heil to the men’s.

Girls basketball

A shot at the buzzer by Post Falls Christian didn’t connect as the Post Falls junior varsity escaped with a 35-32 non-league win Monday night. Grace Bishop had 10 points, including two 3-pointers, for PFC.

Cross country

Washington was 23rd and Idaho 25th in the women’s division of the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships on Monday in Terre Haute, Ind.

Idaho, which had defeated UW three times during the season and was ranked 25, was led by Letiwe Marakurwa in 96th in 21:53.6.

Colorado won both the men’s and women’s team titles. Kim Smith of Providence, won her first cross country title in 20:9.17.

Colorado bested Wisconsin 90-94 in the men’s race.

Women’s basketball

Idaho sophomore guard Leilani Mitchell is the Big West player of the week after leading the Vandals to two wins last week. She had 37 points, including late points that secured both wins, 11 rebounds, 14 steals and 10 assists.
