After 27 years and five expansions, Jewelry Design Center is moving from the north side of Spokane to a high-traffic location just outside of downtown.

The company purchased a 73,000-square-foot lot on the west side of Division from WestCoast Hospitality about three weeks ago. The property, just north of the Holiday Inn Express, is currently a parking lot. However, crews are scheduled to break ground in January on an 11,000-square-foot building with two attached retail bays, said Doug Toone, Jewelry Design Center owner. The retail complex will have about 67 parking spaces.

“I think we’ll be there for the next 100 years,” Toone said.

The recorded sale price for the transaction was $1.18 million, according to First American Title Co.

The new Jewelry Design Center will have an 8,000-square-foot first floor and a 3,000-square-foot mezzanine level for offices, Toone said. An additional 3,500 square feet of retail space will be available for lease.

Toone runs the store with his son, Brian, and employs 23 people. Jewelry Design Center has been located at 4407 N. Division for 27 years and is nestled between Banner Bank and Mr. Tux just south of NorthTown Mall. The store was originally 650 square feet but has expanded over the years to 5,000 square feet.

“We’ve actually run out of space,” Toone said. “Now that my son is on board and loves it and will carry on, we thought, ‘What better time?’”

Toone said he’s hoping to open the new store in July, at which time his current, leased, location will close. The move may necessitate hiring a few people, but it’s not clear how many. Toone said the new building’s design, done by Bernardo Wills Architects, will have the look of a Northwest lodge.

Denise Harfield, commercial leasing manager for G&B Real Estate, represented the seller. She said the property has served as an overflow parking lot in recent years, but that WestCoast has been selling some of its properties to concentrate on hotels.

Grant Person and Scott Person of Tomlinson/Black represented the buyer.
