Donation of blankets needed
Connie Hardan has seen firsthand how people struggle to survive cold winter days and nights. As a social worker for Spokane Child Abuse Neglect prevention, she went into homes where children and families were covered with newspapers, shower curtains and coats, because they had no blankets.
To help provide blankets for these children and adults, Hardan has started “Grandma Lucy’s Blanket Drive,” in memory of Alice “Lucy” Harty, her mother, who died last year.
“This blanket drive is in her honor because she grew up in an orphanage in South Dakota, and she was always cold. I just know that this is something that she would want me to do. I feel that there’s a tremendous need in the community,” said Hardan.
Hardan is looking for new blankets. She has been to some discount stores and has found blankets that cost around $5.
“When I worked at the women’s shelter, some of the things people donated couldn’t even be used as rags. These people have hit on hard times. Why can’t they have a new $4 or $5 blanket?” said Hardan.
Blankets will be given to area community centers for distribution.
Donations to Grandma Lucy’s Blanket Drive can be dropped off at the Life Skills/Women’s Center, downstairs at the Institute for Extended Learning, the lodge building across the street from the Spokane Falls Community College campus, at 3305 W. Fort George Wright Drive.
