Turkey help only a click or call away

Keep that thermometer handy.

Whether this is your first Thanksgiving in the kitchen or your 50th there are the inevitable questions: How do I tell when this bird is done? Is it safe to cook stuffing in the turkey or should I cook it separately?

There is help on the Web or on the phone. In addition to the venerable Butterball Turkey Talk-Line, there are more than a dozen other places to find information. There are answers for everything from questions about the turkey to pies to cookies. Look inside today’s IN Food section for a rundown of helplines and Web sites.

For the record: The turkey should register 165 degrees in the breast and the thickest part of the thigh registers 170 to 175 degrees. And stuffing can be cooked inside the turkey or in a casserole dish as long as it reaches 165 degrees.

Holiday Wine Fest

The Spokane Winery Association will host its annual Holiday Wine Fest from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday at each of the 10 wineries located in and around Spokane.

Each winery will offer tastings of new release wines and food samples free (or for a nominal fee). Winemakers will be available to answer questions about their wines and talk with customers. There also will be discounts on wine bottles and at some wineries there will be live music.

Wineries participating include Arbor Crest, Barrister, Caterina, Grande Ronde, Knipprath, Latah Creek, Lone Canary, Mountain Dome, Robert Karl Cellars and Townshend Cellars. Maps of the other wineries can be found at any of the tasting rooms.

“It is the one time of the year when all the wineries are open to the public, so everyone can see how operations are run,” said Michael Manz, Mountain Dome winemaker. “Wineries will offer specials that you won’t get any other time of the year, and it is a way to support local wineries.”

Season’s delight

Epicurean Delight is the perfect way to warm up your dress for the holiday party season or a good excuse to splurge and wear a tuxedo for the first time since you got married.

The Northwest’s finest restaurants and regional wineries and microbreweries will be featured Friday from 6 p.m. to midnight during this night of dining and dancing. Dress is black tie optional.

Tickets are $150 per person, or $300 for a couple. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Deaconess Medical Center’s Emergency Department.
