Whitworth College placed five players on the All-Northwest Conference football team, announced Monday.

Sophomore wide receiver Jared Thomas, sophomore tight end Michael Allen, senior offensive lineman Tyler Neely, junior place-kicker Cam Collings and senior linebacker Jeremy Scroggins made the first team for the Pirates.

Their efforts helped Whitworth place third in the NWC at 3-2 and finish 7-2 overall.

Pirates on the second team were sophomore quarterback Joel Clark, junior wide receiver Kyle Snell, senior offensive lineman Chris Gilliam, junior offensive lineman Kevin Reese, senior defensive lineman Greg Entel and junior linebacker Daniel Jones.

Snell was named the conference’s special teams player of the week after helping Whitworth defeat Pacific Lutheran 38-35 last Saturday. Snell returned a kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown and ran 37 yards for a first down off a fake punt.

Spokane athletes selected honorable mention were slotback Jeff Liepman, offensive lineman Jeremy Johnson and defensive lineman Allen Coburn, all seniors at Willamette.

Jay Locey, who guided Linfield (9-0, 5-0) to the conference title, was named NWC coach of the year. His junior quarterback, Brett Elliott, was tabbed offensive player of the year. Willamette senior linebacker Logan Lord was named defensive player of the year.

Lafollette High; Rashad Jennings, a 6-8 power forward at Chattanooga (Tenn.) State Tech Community College; and Igor Vrzina, a 6-8 power forward at Hill (Texas) JC.

“This class puts our program in a very positive light heading into the (Western Athletic Conference),” Perry said.

Swimming

Whitworth freshman Samantha Kephart was named NWC women’s swimmer of the week after setting conference records in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly last Saturday against Lewis & Clark.

Kephart finished the 100 in 57.22 seconds and the 200 in 2:04.12. She also won the 100 freestyle.
