Volleyball: The State B tournament kicks off Friday, without two local teams that expected to be part of the festivities. Second-ranked Sprague-Harrington of the Bi-County lost its first two matches of the season on Saturday to miss the state tourney, and sixth-ranked Tekoa-Oakesdale couldn’t grab one of the four spots from the stacked District 9. Five local teams will begin play Friday morning at Eastern Washington University, with tenth-ranked Almira/Coulee-Hartline taking on Summit of Seattle at 10 a.m. Following that, Lind-Ritzville meets top-ranked Garfield-Palouse, and eighth-ranked Davenport plays Evergreen Lutheran at 11:45. Curlew closes out first-round action with a match against seventh-ranked Manson at 1:30. The quarterfinals are at 5:15 and 7, with the semifinals on Saturday at noon. The championship match will be held at 3:30 on Saturday.

Football: The B-11 playoffs start this weekend while the B-8 teams get a week to get ready. The schedule for local B-11 games appears elsewhere on this page. DeSales (9-1) is the B-11 favorite once again, with the Irish going into Friday night’s game with 10th-ranked Liberty (7-2) undefeated against Washington schools. Only a non-league loss to an Oregon team mars their record. Defending champion and fifth-ranked Reardan (8-1) hosts Pateros (5-4), and Northeast B-11 champion and third-ranked Lind-Ritzville entertains Mabton (7-3).

Next weekend’s B-8 state openers will be highlighted by a battle between top-ranked and defending state champ LaCrosse-Washtucna (9-0) and fifth-ranked Sprague-Harrington (9-1).
