Pratt, Willard teachers honored

Sherrie Skladany, a fourth-grade teacher at Pratt Elementary and Chris Moreau, music teacher at Willard Elementary, have been named Spokane Public School’s distinguished educators for the first quarter. The awards are sponsored by Avista Corporation and Comcast.

Skladany’s nominator writes, “Sherrie Skladany is one of the most talented, energetic, enthusiastic teachers. She has a genuine passion for teaching due to her unconditional love for children. She is motivated to ensure that all students in her class learn at the highest level possible. Student learning is paramount! She continually ties teaching to the real world where students can always explain, ‘This is why we are learning this skill and this is how we will use it later in life.’ She is one of those people who never have a bad day. You will always see her with a smile from ear to ear and she can be heard through the building laughing and having fun.”

Chris Moreau’s nominator writes, “Chris Moreau reaches kids! She touches their hearts and minds in ways that defy description. Through her love of music and love of children, and her willingness to go the extra mile, Chris has changed lives. She has taught music at Willard for 10 years. With 630 students, she is always on the go. Yet at the beginning of every new class she takes a deep breath, looks at every child and smiles. Then she begins to share with them the beauty of song, rhythm, instruments, and all that music has to offer.”

Cooper students donate coats

Mike Cosgrove, principal at Cooper Elementary is very proud of his students. The students collected 477 coats for this year’s KXLY’s Coats 4 Kids drive. Close to 70 percent of the 560 students at Cooper qualify for the free or reduced lunch program.

Joan Roberts, the speech and language pathologist at Cooper, helped organize the drive. “We’re just really excited about what the kids did. I just love teaching at Cooper. These parents are so amazing. My assistant and I always remark about how kind and polite the Cooper kids are,” said Roberts.

Roberts said that the classroom that brought in the most coats received a pizza and pop party. The coats were given to the Northeast Community Center for distribution.
