No Moss again this weekend

As expected, the Minnesota Vikings will play another game this week without All-Pro wide receiver Randy Moss.

After making token appearances in the previous two games, Moss sat out Monday night’s loss at Indianapolis with a strained right hamstring, the first absence of his seven-year career.

Since he was injured in the second quarter of Minnesota’s win at New Orleans on Oct. 17, Moss has not caught a pass after recording at least one reception in each of his first 101 games.

That drought will continue on Sunday at Green Bay.

“Now that he’s accepted the fact that he does have an injury, I think we’ll better deal with it,” Vikings coach Mike Tice said Wednesday. “He’s in there rehabbing and training right now.”

Davis frustrated with knee injury

Carolina running back Stephen Davis said he expects to play again this season. He didn’t sound convincing.

Davis has missed six games this season for the Panthers (1-7) because of a knee injury. He had surgery Sept. 17 to repair torn cartilage, and every time he practices and moves closer to playing, his knee swells up.

He practiced Wednesday and is questionable for Sunday’s game against San Francisco. Asked if he expects to play this year, he replied, “At this point, yes. I believe that.”

Then he wavered.

“But I can’t predict the future. As long as it continues to get better each week, I don’t care if it comes down to the last week. If that’s when I’m better, then that’s when I’ll play.”

Broncos shake up D-backs staff

The Denver Broncos fired David Gibbs as defensive backs coach and replaced him with assistant Jimmy Spencer, a former Broncos safety. Kirk Doll, an assistant defensive and special teams coach, will help Spencer with defensive backs.

Around the league

The Miami Dolphins terminated the contract of starting free safety Antuan Edwards, citing his sub-par play and the emergence of his backups as reasons for the surprising move. The Dolphins also reached an injury settlement with kicker Matt Bryant, who was perfect on three attempts while Olindo Mare recovered from a calf injury. … The New York Jets signed quarterback Ricky Ray to their active roster. … Bills offensive tackle Mike Williams missed practice because of a neck injury and could miss Buffalo’s game at New England this weekend. … The Kansas City Chiefs placed linebacker Shawn Barber on injured reserve and prepared for Sunday’s must-win game at New Orleans without All-Pro running back Priest Holmes. Coach Dick Vermeil stopped short of saying Holmes would definitely be out. … The availability of Tennessee Titans quarterback Steve McNair (bruised chest) for Sunday’s home game against Chicago will be a game-time decision.
