Start holiday shopping at Christmas Memories

Steve Christilaw Correspondent

The jack-o’-lantern still sits on the front step and the kids still pick through their Halloween haul, although they’re probably down to the candied dregs by now, the really good stuff having been devoured long before this. But it’s time to think Christmas.

Never mind that this is the first weekend in November, and while the leaves are falling, there are still enough of them left on the trees to make for an amazing array of reds and oranges and yellows on a weekend drive.

Never mind that the Apple Cup game still is two weeks away.

Never mind that Thanksgiving is still weeks away and the turkey you’ll serve your family still roams on a turkey farm somewhere. Well, theoretically. It could well be in a freezer in a warehouse near you. And, also theoretically, your holiday cranberries are still floating in a bog somewhere. The green beans for the annual green bean casserole, however, have been in a can now for who-knows-how-long (and it’s best not to dwell on that fact).

Never mind that we have yet to see the first appearance of “It’s A Wonderful Life,” or seen Yukon Cornelius in the animated “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” Or that we’ve yet to begin the inevitable stream of teeny-boppers-doing-Christmas-at- Disney-World television specials that hit the airwaves every holiday season.

And never mind that your Christmas tree still resides back on the Christmas tree farm or grows unmolested in a forest somewhere nearby, its branches untrimmed, it’s boughs untinseled and its trunk still attached its roots.

It’s time to think Christmas.

Hey, the Christmas fliers already have begun showing up in your Sunday paper, right?

There was even a brief snow flurry, wasn’t there?

That means it’s time for Christmas. Dec. 25 is seven weeks from today. Considering the fact that you can now shop 24 hours a day, that means there are just 48 shopping days. If you prefer, that’s 1,152 shopping hours

And not just Christmas. Christmas Memories.

The annual holiday gift show of that name runs this weekend at the Sports USA complex deep in the heart of the Spokane Valley, showcasing an array of seasonal arts and crafts, including candles, clothing, music, wood decor items, gourmet foods, pottery, toys, ceramics, florals, metal work and fine art.

The show, which opened Friday, runs from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. today and from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. Sunday. There is plenty of free parking and, with 45,000-square-feet of exhibition space, you’re virtually guaranteed to find something new and exciting for the holiday season.

Sports USA is located just off Barker Road on Cataldo. The $5 admission price is good for the run of the show.
