Doritos Rollitos has classic flavor in new shape

Lorie Hutson Food editor

If you’re wandering the chip aisle of the supermarket this weekend, you might notice new Doritos brand Rollitos among the bags of picnic fare.

Frito-Lay has rolled its famous chips into a crunchy, bite-sized snack. The chip makers have been giving their products a makeover lately. Chips have been puffed into 3-D cereal-sized snacks and stacked into single-serving containers.

The Spokesman-Review food panel members liked the classic Nacho Cheesier taste of Doritos enough to give its cousin a four-star rating. The Zesty Taco came in close behind with a three-and-a-half star score. Doritos Rollitos also come in Cooler Ranch.

Although they liked the taste, most weren’t inspired by the new shape.

Panelist Marilyn Moore called them “finger friendly.”

“Novel,” said panel member Larry Inman, adding the compact profile might make for easier dipping.

“Classic taste of Doritos,” said Skip Hubbard. “If you’re into folded-over chips in a bag you’re in for a treat.”

Others wondered whether the new chip shape was necessary.

“How many ways can you make a chip?” wondered Tina Johnson. “The only advantage between this and regular Doritos is the space it takes up. Is that a reason to develop them? No.”

Donald Clegg agreed.

“I’m not sure the world needs a nacho chip that looks like a teeny enchilada but (with a) typical nacho cheese flavor,” Clegg said.
